“Good hotel in a very nice area.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2011

Stayed in this hotel from 8 - 10 July 2011. Had a great welcome by the staff on duty. They even oferred me free WiFi after i told them that my HHonors status was mixed up and there was an errror. Clean room with very contemprorary furnishing. Fantastic location and 2 min walk to tram line. Tram passes as well as museum tickets etc. were sold at the hotel concierge or book store. Will definitely stay there again.
Only negative thing was the room rate and food/internet rate in the hotel. If you avoid that then its a very good hotel to stay.

In a nutshell - Hilton standards a bit older but still in a good condition. Location in a quiet neighborhood a bit far from downtown. You could still walk but will take something like 30+minutes and a cab from Central Station will be something like 20 euros. The Executive Lounge was small but nice.

I travel quite a bit for business around Europe and mostly stay within the Hilton group, with as resultant diamond status at the Hilton. In light of this I found that the Hilton Amsterdam is severely over priced and the front desk staff snobby compared to other establishments.

The front desk staff like speaking about guests in Dutch, thinking that they don't understand (I incidentally speak very good dutch, but kept myself "dumb"). I find this quite patronising and rude (to speak another language in front of the customer) and in poor taste.

Also strangely, as a diamond member, I have never ever had the benefit of a room upgrade to the executive floor (4 stays and counting). That in itself is understandable, but what is frustrating is that the standard rooms have less amenities (such as the mineral water that was only replaced after two days!), whilst at the same time the executive lounge runs out of drinks during the day (mini-mini-bar fridge).

The executive lounge is also, despite the magnificent view, uninspiring, with the same fare in snacks every day, with no variation.

Strange is also that the fitness club is only open from 7am in the morning (I'm heading to work then already to beat the dutch traffic, which essentially renders the fitness club useless to me) and charges a 17.50€ fee as well (for non HH gold and diamond members). In addition I find the daily fee of 34€ for parking quite steep (Hilton The Hague has VALET parking at 20€ per day in comparison). On top of that the Hilton Amsterdam offers soaps for sale in the room as well as their cusions. Maybe an interesting idea, however it feels like I am permanentaly living in a "let's-milk-this-customer-for-all-he-is-worth" supermarket when at the Hilton Amsterdam.

What tops it for me is that, despite the overly focus on making the most € out of the customer (refer the shops in the lobby as well!), the iron is chained to the ironing board, as if I will pinch the iron. This results in turning your shirt-ironing-experience into an artful dance to untangle the chain and get all sides of your shirt crease-free.

Maybe am a little harsh on the Hilton Amsterdam, but I do think I am comparing apples to apples (Hilton Amsterdam to Hilton The Hague, Hilton Rotterdam Hilton Schipol, and Hilton Brussels, none of which chains the iron to the board, tries peddling their cushions or extra soaps - with the most of expensive of the comparison group being 15% CHEAPER than the Hilton Amsterdam, etc) and that the Hilton Amsterdam comes out as a definite plum.

Room Tip: Nothing helps, not HH diamond status, nor booking early, nor staying there regularly. It is luck of...

In your comments you have described your experience at the Front Desk. I have taken this comment very seriously and shared your feedback with the team to review our hospitality at the Front Desk.

The staff were friendly and generally helpful. The rooms we clean, decent desk space for working in the room and the room had nice view towards the city. The best part of the hotel was their terrace bar overlooking the canal. A great place to end the evening.
There were numerous decent restaurants in walking distance and the nearby park was great for a jog, walk or drink.

Room Tip: Canal view or city view, choose a high floor

Dear Chashk,

Thank you very much for your review of the Hilton Amsterdam.

We really appreciate your positive comments regarding our Team Members and the hotel rooms. The terrace is indeed the perfect venue for ending the evening with a nice cocktail or granita. The Vondelpark is definitely a wonderful place for all kinds of activities.

I'm lucky my stay here was due to business; anyone traveling for pleasure can easily find an equally nice hotel for a much lower price. The regular room rate here is EUR 449 per night and only breakfast is included; you have to pay extra for use of the in-room internet access, which is EUR 27 per day for full 24-hour access. My room is ok, but it's pretty dated and not worth the rate. The TV is small with only a few channels, and they don't have HBO or anything similar. Thankfully, I was either working or out sightseeing, so I didn't need it as much.

On the plus side, the hotel is located in a very quiet part of Amsterdam in the "Oud Zuid" section, which my cab driver said is up-and-coming. A pretty canal flows directly behind the hotel and if you're lucky to get a room with a view, it's pretty nice. The hotel is very close to tram stops for the 5, 16, and 24 trams, so you can easily get anywhere else in the city. Also, if you're a walker, the museum district is only about 15 minutes away. Vondelpark is closer - about a 5 minute walk three blocks from the hotel.

At the hotel itself, the staff speak excellent English and are very helpful. Room service is prompt for both delivery and pick-up when you're done. Housekeeping comes through twice a day and respects the "do not disturb" sign if you don't want to be bothered.

The cab fare here from the airport is steep, about EUR 35 each way, but I couldn't figure out the train system at the airport and was too tired to deal with it, so I chose to pay the fare. If you're not here on business, though, and can't expense it, the train from the airport is much cheaper.

Room Tip: Ask for a canal view

Nice hotel but very overpriced for the experience. Internet very costly, breakfast is an easy $80 USD...so not worth it. But a clean nice hotel. Wouldn't pay for it personally tho.

Very nice hotel, location for ourselves was ideal being out of the centre of the town, lovely views of the canal from both our room and in the bar which was frequented a fair bit. Got a lovely little cake on my birthday from the hotel which was very appreciated and a nice touch. Would go back there with no quips.
