“Design is OK, but the rest is pretty average”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2012

if you want a small design hotels, head to sebastian hotel, this one claim to have a nice design but it is not so great, on other hand, internet never worked in the room the entire time we were there, they only take credit cards (which is not a problem) but strange. same with the coffee shop downstairs, only credit cards. the rooms are super small with terrible view and the toilet must be the smallest in the world,. and on the top of that it is not cheap.

Firstly the staff are terrifically friendly and helpful. The hotel is very clean and well maintained. It is situated close to the railway station and five minutes from tram stops on Damrak. It is very convenient as long as you don't mind being on the main thoroughfare into town from the station. We knew where it was when we booked but if you want scenic don't stay on Damrak.
Our room was a trompe l'oeil of an old hotel room. Truly fascinating but slightly dangerous when you try and lean on a shelf that isn't there or switch on a light switch that doesn't exist. Unfortunately the image of the old room had more facilities than the new one. There was a great bathroom with sandpaper rather than toilet paper but good fluffy towels. There was a rack to hang clothes but no other storage and no desk or table or shelf to place your laptop on when using the free wifi. I like arty hotels; I've stayed in lots but I do like a little furniture with the style. All in all interesting but I wouldn't stay there again

The hotel is very clean and with well-designed room . Althought the double room is too small , we still had a good sleep quality because the comfortable bedquilt .
The most important is that have a most convenient location in the high street for touristy .

We stayed in this hotel recently for 4 days and although it was a slightly expensive, it was worth the money. It was in a great location, 5 minute walk from Central Station and very near Dam Square. The hotel was very clean, and the maid came everyday to change towels and bedding. The rooms were a bit on the small side, but it didn't really bother us as we were only using it as a place to sleep! There were no wardrobes, so we just had to hang our clothes on hooks on the wall. If I were to return to Amsterdam, I would definitely book this hotel again. I have seen other comments were people have commented on the noise, I have to say I never heard anything :)

I spent one night at this hotel after a convention in Frankfurt and a night in Brussels at a "box" hotel. I wanted something different and that is what I got. This hotel is in a great location, I walked from the train station, excellent service and the only thing missing is air conditioning. They do have about 10 fans that you can have in your room, but they go quickly so I would request one with your reservation. It's very cool that each room is unique and mine was like sleeping under a giant hoop skirt that went under a dress. The 5 star rooms were not full and we were able to see them.

I've learned recently from other Europeans that we as Americans are very used to air conditioning and we would rather freeze in a room than have it just be comfortable. There was a heat wave when I was there, and with my room facing inward, the open window did nothing to circulate the air. If you are a light sleeper you may want to have ear plugs as the walls are quite thin and you can hear conversations.

This hotel is narrow so the rooms are at different levels and locations. My room had an A-Frame shape and I could hear conversations to the side of me but on the upper level of the A-frame! Overall I would stay here again just knowing now what to expect.

The very cute dutch girl (with the long name at the front desk) is excellent, very friendly and accommodating. She gave an excellent restaurant suggestion which I was hesitant about since I had never had Indonesian food: Kantjil En De Tijger. It was amazing. If you go, get a Rijstafels which is like a big sampler. We had the meat one. I'll write a separate review there. My biggest thing is to go eat where there are both locals and tourists, this fit the bill.

Finally, on my last morning I went to the Anne Frank House which was amazing, buy tickets on line first and reserve a tour time in English. I went at 9am and had a flight at 2:50pm-took the train to the airport and timing worked out fine.

To be fair I have to admit, my impression coming from one front desk girl (which long dutch name I could never remember). When we arrived, we were told that we got an "upgrade" , yet after seeing the room we felt depressed- it was dark gloomy room made out of black tomentum. I mean everything! - walls, ceiling, floors, curtains etc. sad & freaky! So we refused such "upgrade" and asked for something more cheerful, and what a backtalk we got as a response from that "WILLixxx.ksje" girl?!

basically, it killed the mood in me to ever talk to any of personal afterwards... yet, we got another room... which was lighter, yet facing the street, and all night and early 7 am we could hear EVERYTHING: street washing machines, drunk singing and high laughs etc. etc. I mean you can literally hear every word.

I got sick next day, and another - nice front desk guy, gave us "sound proof" room where I spent in bed next 8 hours.

+++ Some sweet manager was nice to us to send a tea to the room when I was sick and called the doctor.
so consider that as a 3 star, otherwise it was ZERO!

PS. 5 star hotel room ACTUALLY barely makes it to 3 star. besides funky style, they have nothing else to offer.

Room Tip: Definitely do not pay for 5 star DOESN'T WORTH IT. make sure to get on the higher floor or insid...
