“How Amsterdam was built!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2014

Good informative museum. Explains how the canals were planned and how the houses were constructed. Headsets are available and are a must to get the best out of the museum. The museum is situated alongside the Herengracht canal and gives you an insight to living in a typically wealthy Dutch persons residence in the 18th century.

“Delightful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2014 via mobile

This was a charming, interactive experience, which the children absolutely loved. The staff were helpful and seemed rightly proud of this well thought out history of the design of Amsterdam and the canals. Not stuffy or boring - well worth a visit.

“Disappointing ”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2014

If you are interested in how the canals were built and want to learn interesting facts about the canal system, then don't go here, just google it! If you are interested in the history of the population and about building of the houses along the canals, then this may be of interest to you. There is some nice videos and hologram displays, just not what I was hoping for as I didn't feel I understood much about the build by the end of the audio tour.

“Perfect 40min-1hour review on the history of the Canals”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2014

Het Grachtenhuis in English would be 'Museum of the Canals'- which probably tells you what the museum is all about.

The way they convey the information is very illustrative- through various films and projections which makes it slightly unusual but certainly very entertaining.

It is a tiny, intuitive and informative little museum that provides you with more or less a general sweep of the history of Amsterdam- from the planning of the construction of the city of and its development, to how the houses in Amsterdam were built (woodwork before laying the bricks).

The tours run every 7 minutes, where it starts of very impressively with a section of Amsterdam's houses in white are overlayed with a videos/film/projection while showing you the history of Amsterdam. And from there, you progress into other rooms and see more of these videos/films/projections before ending up in a non-guided tour section of the museum.

Also, the employers working there are very enthusiastic about their work and would be happy to answer any of your questions!

This was perhaps the best museum I've seen in Amsterdam and I would highly recommend going for it. And if you purchased an iAmsterdam card, this little gem's entrance fee is included in it. It is a relatively new museum- so please do go and support them! :)
