“Small and intimate - and good food too!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

Although you are told to book ahead at this well situated canal-side cellar restaurant on the edge of the Jordaan we managed to get a table without forward planning. Perhaps we were just lucky or maybe it's busier at weekends...
Nice food with a menu which hardly ever changes except for a soup of the day and a sauce or two.
And really good value - for €25 we were treated to a three course meal including a delicious main course of veal. The menu is short - often a good sign - but our selections were really nice.
We'll go back without hesitation next time we are in Amsterdam.

“Perfect little bistro”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013 via mobile

Tired after a day in museums and walking, and fortunate to have somehow thought to book, we tumbled down the stairs into De Struisvogel - and what a revelation! It's small - 16 or so seats - wood panelled, cosy, friendly, noisy and unlike most Amsterdam places, gets the service spot on. The drink was decent and flowed well, the food exceptional for such a place. The fish was cooked exactly right, the veal tongue just the right mix of soft and firm, and as others have said, the lamb stew is full of concentrated flavour. Do not miss the apple and rhubarb crumble either; though the cheese was a good selection too. 3 courses of that quality for €25; best value we had in 5 days. Furthermore, the chef brought each course out himself and told us how he'd cooked it. We simply couldn't have been made more welcome. Heads out of the sand, you ostriches - just flock to de Struisvogel!

“A gem”

Tiny restaurant full of great food. The ambiance is warm and inviting and the food is great. A mix of locals and visitors in a communal setting. A definite must try. Make a reservation!

“i love this place. it's so cozy, friendly and has really nice lamb stew”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2013

we were hungry and this place was just there so we went in without knowing anything about it. it was 10pm and we were the only table. the waitress was super friendly and recommended our dinner. the food was really really nice, esp the lamb stew.
the decor was simple, but there's sthg warm, cozy and charming about this place, even if it's underground and all. i would definitely go back again and again, if only i can find it again. love it.

“Dine like a Dutch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

We walked by and nearly missed this cozy underground restaurant on prinsengracht. It was intriguing enough to walk down the steep staircase and check it out. They offer a 3 course menu for €25 which I found to be creative and well worth the price. The server checked on us after each course and had a cheerful personality even after Alice spilled her drink on the poor lady. This is great service in my book. I don't often return to the same restaurant twice but I think we'll be back here
