Tired after a day in museums and walking, and fortunate to have somehow thought to book, we tumbled down the stairs into De Struisvogel - and what a revelation! It's small - 16 or so seats - wood panelled, cosy, friendly, noisy and unlike most Amsterdam places, gets the service spot on. The drink was decent and flowed well, the food exceptional for such a place. The fish was cooked exactly right, the veal tongue just the right mix of soft and firm, and as others have said, the lamb stew is full of concentrated flavour. Do not miss the apple and rhubarb crumble either; though the cheese was a good selection too. 3 courses of that quality for €25; best value we had in 5 days. Furthermore, the chef brought each course out himself and told us how he'd cooked it. We simply couldn't have been made more welcome. Heads out of the sand, you ostriches - just flock to de Struisvogel!
