Most reviewers rightly compliment the staff on being very friendly and helpful in this spotlessly clean hotel but there are some annoying quirks!
"Fashionable" coffee machine in the room has ingredients for only three tiny cups of coffee.
The mini bar is in fact a small vending machine so one can't use it as a fridge.
We needed instruction on the use of the hi-tec light switches and still weren't sure the bulbs hadn't gone anyway!
Tips- a large supermarket is three minutes walk away, other side of canal (there is a bridge outside the hotel!) Their off-license isn't open Sundays.
-A further ten minutes gets you to the Rijks Museum (World famous Flemish art, 15 Euro) On the way you can visit the Heineken Experience which is 10 Euro more than the museum!
-There is a continual stream of tourist canal boats passing the hotel but most in a clockwise direction around the system so one could board one for sightseeing as well as transport to say the Royal Palace or Central station (both beautiful buildings) but the return journey is through a laberinth of canals being part of a two hour trip. Furthermore, they aren't that frequent from the hotel (see timetable on noticeboard by small landing stage) whereas by the Rijks there seem to be more of them.
-The Old Church is interesting only because it is large, without much inside and in the centre of the Red Light district.
-Hotel is within 10 minutes walk of the main eating/ drinking area, on the way one passes a few shops.
-Great care with cyclists who don't stop for red lights (traffic ones, that is,) and woe betide you if you walk along a cycle lane if one of them is coming. The small roads by the canals are fraught with not only the cyclists but electric cars so one can't hear the impending danger from behind.
-There are tram stops outside the hotel (you don't hear them as the hotel windows are sealed) for north/south destinations.
No doubt there are hotels nearer the centre but they would need to be a pretty high standard and reasonably priced to beat this one.
