“Wonderful hotel in Amsterdam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2014 via mobile

We stayed at Hotel Restaurant Larende for 2 nights in late June. The room (103) was really nice. In the back, so it was very quiet, and with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom was also very nice. The breakfasts were great, with many choices for some one who is gluten free like me. They even brought me gluten-free bread and crackers and cookies. The people at the desk were extremely helpful. We got our tickets to the museums there, so at the museums we were in the fast lines. It is easy to get to, although a little way out from central Amsterdam. We took the train from the airport into Central Station, and took the tram from there. Would definitely stay there again when we go back to Amsterdam. There is also a very good Italian restaurant down the street, Cantinetta Wine and Pasta (No. 105). They also had gluten-free pasta. The wait may be rather long if you don't have reservations, but you can walk down around 5 and make a reservation for later.

Very glad I chose this hotel. The location was slightly outside of the hustle and bustle of the city centre, but the tram to central is just a few minutes walk away. The neighbourh is lovely, and I wish we'd had more time to explore the surrounding.

I have just left this hotel, after a really nice stay. It is a small hotel; basic, but clean, friendly, with a really nice staff. I'd recommend it strongly, as offering excellent value. It is in a nice part of the town, with reasonable places to eat nearby (I particularly enjoyed a small Indonesian restaurant). It also offers good food at its own restaurant, with a 10% discount for residents. The breakfast (included) is also good.

A few tips/suggestions. I got a really good rate, by booking a long time ahead through the hotel's own web site. I was in a single room at the front of the hotel. This was noisy - in part because the Dutch had just won a football match, but more important because of the trams that go past the front and because of motor scooters. Another time, I'd request - but it would cost a bit more - a room at the back.

Other points: the hotel can book you a very good taxi rate to the airport - e28 rather than the e43 which is what is often charged.

I will certainly be back - but also at the back rather than the front of the hotel, if I can.

Room Tip: As I have indicated in the main part of my review, the single room that I had overlooking the street...

My parents stayed here between 21-29 of May.

The host was very welcoming, willing to help all the time. The owner has one goal - the tourist must have the best time in his hotel. The room was clean, every 2 days they changed the sheets and towels.

Breakfast was rich, fresh and had a large variety to choose from (ham, cheese, vegetables, yoghurt, juice, hot croissants).

We thank the owner and his staff for the wonderful stay, and highly recommend this hotel to any tourist visiting Amsterdam.
We wish them health and good luck. The stay in this hotel remains a very nice memory. We will be thinking of you! (Fam. Dumitrescu - Romania)

Hotel rooms are generally small in Amsterdam (for people on my budget, about $150/night). We stayed in room 403 and it was SMALL--perhaps "normal small" for Amsterdam, but small nonetheless. We asked for a double (assuming one bed) and ended up pushing two twin beds together (which was fine). The bed was pretty hard and the foam pillow was not comfortable. We had no space to move at the end of the bed because there was a table there. And, interestingly, there were stools under the table, but there was no room on the floor to use them, so they stayed under the table, useless! The room had good lighting for reading and plenty of electrical outlets. There was a closet, but just four hangers--and no room to sort things--so we just piled our clothes on a shelf and left it at that. There is a mini-bar with some extra space for yogurt, which was nice. The room was very clean--and great bathroom (small, but nice shelf space and good shower). Another reviewer called the breakfast "boring" but, for our week-long visit we noted 20+ different items (eggs, meat, cheese, croissants, breads, cereal, veg, incredible fresh mixed fruit salad). I am not sure what else one could have for breakfast! There is a small elevator. The staff are clearly committed to being courteous and friendly--it isn't just an accident that so many reviewers note that. We always felt welcome. Our only concerns were about the room: there was no place to sit, except the bed, and one of us kept different hours than the other which was a problem because there is no lobby for someone to stay up late reading while the other slept. Our room was also quite warm (it was on the top floor), despite very mild temperatures outside. When we opened the window, we encountered noise from people talking/laughing below us (we think we overlooked an apartment courtyard), but that ended by 10 pm. Most distressing, when we opened the windows there was a horrible smell outside that never went away. It smelled like palm oil or some kind of very strong cooking grease--it was like being in back of a fast-food restaurant. It permeated the room (I feel sorry for the people who have to live with that smell), so we chose stuffy and not smelly.

Would we stay again? We are unsure. The room is tight for two people--even two people who have been married for decades! When we travel, we don't spend a lot of time in the room, except to sleep, but for the few nights that we were tired and wanted to read, it was cramped and not too comfortable. As a single person, I would consider it because of the cleanliness, the location (great neighborhood--away from the tourists, but close to everything by tram or walking. Near a grocery store and wonderful restaurants), and the very kind people who worked there.

Room Tip: We stayed in the back of the hotel--room 403. Except for chatter from what we think is an apartment...

Very close to tram, 5 mns from the square, yet very quiet and relaxing hotel. The rooms are very clean, the staff helpful.
Breakfast is very boring. The manager is very helpful and attentionate. Free coffee and tea and the wifi works great in the rooms. We got a room with a small balcony. Will def go back to larende.

This is s great three star hotel with everything I look for: helpful staff, good location in a real neighborhood, full breakfast, all at a fair price. The hotel manager, who I think is also the owner, is generous with information and quick to offer a water or coffee. The hotel is in a close-in neighborhood, on three tram lines, and walking distance to most tourist spots if you like hoofing-it. The immediate neighborhood is changing with new restaurants and pubs on every block. The hotel itself is small and the rooms are small but clean. The front desk is staffed 24 hours. The breakfast room is also the hotel restaurant. (Good pizza). My first room was a double and was quiet and roomy enough. My second room was a single and quite small, but who stays in their room in Amsterdam?

Room Tip: Hotel is on a tram line and busy street. Street side rooms can be noisy.
