My friends and I stayed in 2 rooms in Hotel Orlando last weekend and loved it. Our rooms were located at the back of the hotel, one in the basement and one on the ground floor. We heard no noise at night and slept soundly. I am not sure about the rooms on the upper floors, the stairs up to them looked very steep but this is common in Amsterdam. The rooms and bathrooms were comfortable, spacious and clean. There is no reception in the hotel, you are given a key and come and go as you please. During our 3 days we dealt with a young woman and man who were both very helpful and accomodating. They gave us maps and marked out all the places we wished to visit, recommended restaurants to us, and it was no problem storing our bags as we had an evening flight home. They even put a 3rd bed in one of the rooms for us at a very small extra cost.
The breakfast consisted of fresh orange juice, coffee/tea, warm rolls & brown bread, cheese, ham, egg and yogurt. We found it very good.
I feel the best thing about the hotel is its location. It is a lovely house situated facing a canal on a quiet safe street (police station few doors up). At the top of the street there are plenty of shops, bars and restuarants. It is 3 streets away from rembrantplein which has great nightlife, a 10 min walk from waterlooplein market, albert cruypt market and the flower market, and very accessible to the city centre. I feel the hotel and location really made our trip - I had previously stayed in hotels near damrak and central station - but much preferred this location!!! It was very peaceful and relaxing yet easy walking distance to the city centre.
One thing to be careful of it that some taxi drivers are not sure of the location as it is a very small hotel, it is handy to have it marked on a map for them!!!
I think the Hotel Orlando is great value and would highly recommend it. My friends and I are already planning our next trip back =0)
