“A perfect base for exploring Amsterdam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2010

We have just returned from staying at Hotel Orlando, on the recommendation of my parents who have stayed there previously. They booked three nights in the hotel for us as a wedding present and we decided to go on the first bank holiday in May.

Although we knew it was Queen's Day when we arrived on the Friday, we were not prepared for the spectacle that met us! The Dutch certainly know how to party! However, we found the hotel no problem, even though we were not able to be dropped outside, and we were in room 117. This light, airy and spacious room, complete with three windows overlooking the canal, provided us with the perfect base to sit and watch the festivities outside.

The room came complete with a safe, TV and mini-bar, as well as a large, clean and modern bathroom with a great shower. The beds, although twins, were extemely comfortable and the hotel was charming. As it only has five rooms, you don't feel like you are in a large chain and it was very peaceful - with the exception of the party outside!

Breakfast was wonderful - although continental in style, it was tasty and filling and set us up well for the day. Each day we had lovely rye bread, fresh croissants, bread rolls, ham, cheese, boiled egg, fresh orange, fantastic fresh coffee and a yogurt.

The hotel is perfectly situated for exploring Amsterdam, both in terms of the sights and the restaurants and bars. We found the city small enough that we were able to walk everywhere, but there are always the options of the canal boat and the tram as well.

Although there is no front desk at the hotel, we saw Rose every day at breakfast and they couldn't do enough for us in terms of booking a taxi to the airport, allowing us to leave our bags there on the day we checked out etc.

All in all, a fantastic hotel and we would highly recommend it to any independent traveller visiting Amsterdam.

I stayed at Hotel Orlando last week and would really recommend it to anyone who would like to explore Amsterdam as a tourist. Its location is central with loads of nice places to eat just around the corner. The room I stayed in, 116, was large, clean and very quiet.

We stayed at the Hotel Orlando for six nights in August. We appreciated staying out on one if the ring canals as it gave you a better feel for the residents of the city rather than the business of the Dam Square/train station area. We were able to walk everywhere and the tram also ran frequently right at the end of the street. There were many cafes, restaurants and coffeehouses nearby. The room was big with a modern bathtub and shower, two large windows. Breakfast was included and was comprised of fresh squeezed orange juice, coffee or tea, boiled egg, bread, rolls, butter, two jams, cheese and ham. Both Paul M. and Rose were very welcoming, gave us great advice about restaurants and we enjoyed chatting with them at breakfast. There is no main desk which wasn't a problem for us as we were able to ask our questions at breakfast. They are available by phone through the day. We loved this home base for exploring Amsterdam and would recommend it if you like to stay in small independent hotels.

This is a small hotel (5 rooms) in an excellent location for visiting Amsterdam. The room was spacious and equipped with internet and refrigerator and safe -- 3 very nice things to have. Comfortable bed and nice bathtub.
There is no common lobby or area. And no real proprietor presence to provide advice or assistance.
The owner was there when we arrived at time expected and he also arranged to leave breakfast items available so we could get our own breakfast of sorts the final morning when we needed to get off early to make our plane. We were grateful for that.
We had a real sense of privacy which we value in Amsterdam.
It is fairly pricey for value received; the breakfast in particular is pretty lame (except for the excellent OJ).
Overall, we were pleased and really loved the location -- but compared with other places we stayed on the trip it was expensive for what was provided. We also had a garden rather than canal view -- that was what was available, but if booking, the canal rooms are really much more attractive and worth asking for. We paid as much as charged for the room across the hall with the great canal view. And on a visit to Amsterdam earlier in the summer, we paid much less for a full apartment with canal view.

Very nice bedroom, quite large, very clean, and also very comfortable
Small hotel, so that you almost feel at home (5 bedrooms).
Very quiet area along a lovely canal and well located.
People are also very friendly.
The only minor drawback could be the breakfast that is not very frugal.

We stayed three nights in a large room (117) overlooking Prinsengracht canal. The room was attractive with some nice deco-style furniture. The hotel is in a good location, with a tram stop a short distance away (100m or so) so you can get anywhere pretty quickly. There was also a hopper bus service running along the whole of Prinsegracht which was very useful e.g. you can flag it down outside the hotel and travel straight to the Anne Frank house. The location is a nice area with several good bars and restaurants - some round the corner on Utrechstrasse looked very good if you're feeling affluent. It felt like a relatively quiet and safe area - possibly helped by the fact there's a police station a few metres away.
Breakfast was enjoyable - ham, cheese, jams, freshly warmed bread and croissants, good coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice.

We stayed at the Orlando for two nights and had 2 rooms. They were both very stylish and clean. The stairs of a canal house are very narrow and steep so it would be wise to take two small bags rather than one large one. The breakfast was very enjoyable We had freshly squeezed orange juice , good coffee, a boiled egg and delicious bread. There are many restaurants only 5 mins walk away.. The owner Paul was very friendly and helpful. This is a really good location and very good value.
