One thing is for sure, the Black Tulip will not fade in your memory as just another small hotel that you stayed in. The Black Tulip has a gay S&M theme, but anyone with an open mind will feel welcomed and comfortable there. We were amazed at how many of our friends knew of the Black Tulip and were envious of us for our stay. We only met Onno, one of the two owners, who could not be more helpful. He gave us a great overview of the city upon our arrival and was always there to assist us. He also makes great omelets! The hotel is in a great location on a canal near the train station. It is also near many Asian restaurants and a short walk to the red light district. Our room, number 22, faced the canal and had some great toys. The room and bathroom were very clean. The stairs are steep (like most of Amsterdam), so we were happy to not be up too high. There is a refrigerator in the common area with complimentary beverages, a very nice touch. Also free room internet, and an available computer in the breakfast room. Only two small gripes, and they are small, although the hotel common areas are nonsmoking, people do smoke in the rooms so it can be strong in the hallways. Likewise, there is an inner courtyard that people smoke in, and our only opening window was to the courtyard. Also, breakfast is not served until 10 AM, so if you are an early riser or have an early sight seeing reservation, it can be an issue. Breakfast was however worth waiting for and very good. Meeting the other house guests at the long breakfast table was an enjoyable part of the day. Stay here, have a good time, and make a life time memory!
