5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

Very helpful and friendly staff. I had a great room. I would go back. I had to leave before breakfast, so cannot comment. A comfortable common area. Very close to tram to Central station. Not a bad walk to other tourist areas.

We stayed for 5 nights. Our room was in the annexe, a lovely tall olf house in the Utrechtestraat, with a view over the street corner and the Prinsengracht canal. It was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The bedlinen and towels were changed and the room was cleaned every day. The staff at Reception (we saw three different people) were all very friendly and helpful. The location in the city centre is ideal for sight-seeing, shopping and for getting the tram, although many places are within easy walking distance. We found it very good value for a city centre hotel.

Room Tip: Our ensuite room on the first floor at the front of the Utrechtestraat annexe was very comfortable w...

I should start by pointing this out that, due to an earlier clusterf0ck by a Dutch hotel website, my overnight stay in this hotel cost me the princely sum of €4 (all of which was at least nominally Tax). In addition, the Reception staff were consistently helpful and friendly, the main building looks fine and the location is absolutely superb. My favourite Brown Cafe (i.e. not a drugged-up "Coffee Shop") is diagonally opposite, and you can not only walk to the Rembrandtplein in about 10 minutes, there's a tram right outside which will take you there, the Central Station or to/from Amsterdam South (which is where you need to go to/from Schiphol Airport). I love this area, and this hotel is right in the middle of it

OK, here comes the bad bit: "the other building" is about 2 minutes away across the canal and in fact named "The Townhouse Hotel", but its not a hotel, just a couple of rooms clustered around a communal toilet on the first floor of a canalside building. The stairs are Himalayan even by the perpendicular standards of the Barry House Hotel in London, and the best way I can describe this annex is "Forgotten". "Less Favoured" might be another charitable description

The room was clean but very small; the washbasin had neither a plug nor hot water; there was a kettle but no tea or coffee, the wifi was free but intermittent, there was no wardrobe (just some hooks) and no apparent heating. The street outside was noisy until around 0300 and the sound insulation minimal.

OK, if you have absolutely no money and a voucher for a free night from a spic internet booking firm, this might be the place for you; frankly - and I accept that Amsterdam accommodation is ludicrously expensive - I would recommend either sleeping at the airport or on a park bench (the Frederiksplein is quite close by), or going without food in order to be able to afford a proper hotel.

I can't recommend it - at least, not "the Other Building"

Room Tip: Book elsewhere

I spent 3 nights at the ITC hotel. It's an old, refurbished canal house situated on one of the canals (obviously). It's very close to lots of restaurants and was pretty easy to get to from the tram (we took the train from the airport to the train station, then took a tram which stopped 2 blocks from the hotel). The room was very clean (long and narrow), not fancy, but great value for money. It was also very safe to walk around that area of the canals. You can easily spend a day (or more) just wandering along the canals enjoying those tall, narrow houses that look like they're falling over.

Room Tip: If you've never been to Amsterdam, I would recommend staying along the canals or near the museum...
