“A Good Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 weeks ago

We had a wonderful experience at the hotel. The staff was friendly and very helpful, and the room was nice and decorated according to "the philosopher" theme.
We were in the Karl Marx room which was a nice room; although it was slightly odd that the room description was a double bed but it was two single mattresses put together. This was a bit strange at first but not a big issue. Also the bathroom door is a sliding door, which, again, was odd but kitschy.
It was also a reasonable distance to everything. About a 10 minute walk to a popular food plaza and the museum district. We took the tram around for the first day - which was easy to access and use - but soon realised that the distances were walkable (if you don't mind walking for a couple of hours).
Overall, we were happy with everything and had an awesome time in Amsterdam. I highly recommend visiting this friendly city, and the hotel is an affordable and convenient place to stay.

Having seen the images on the website, I was very disappointed in this accommodation. I booked a single room, which was on the third floor. It was room 34, small, and clean, but very basic, and not at all of the standard shown online. The walls connecting to the corridor and the lift, and the door were very flimsy, so lots of noise as people moved around. The room didn't border any others, so I'm not sure what the sound would be like generally from other rooms, but this wasn't an issue for me. The staff I encountered were responsive in a simple kind of way, not especially helpful or friendly. There was a box, probably Wi-Fi or TV related placed high in one corner of the room which flashed rapidly throughout the night. The Wi-Fi was free and provided a good connection. This standard of accommodation is equivalent to a pretty basic B&B in the UK, without the tea and coffee making facilities. The shower and bathroom were fine, except that the shower screen was very slim, so water ended up everywhere after one shower. On the plus side the location is pretty good, close to the park, some shops, a short walk from the centre. There were some quirky touches, artwork and quotes which added a bit of colour, but didn't lift the otherwise drab impression to a level I would have expected for the cost (around £90 without breakfast).

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The room we stayed in was clean and well decorated but was a little small for two people. It had patio doors that lead to a small garden which was a nice touch and meant we could sit outside. The bathroom was a little cramped and could do with a refit as it was a bit dated and there was no shower door on the cubicle but it was clean and there was always plenty of hot water. The wifi signal wasn't the best and was a bit slow but as we didn't use it too much this didn't bother us much.
The hotel was in a decent location near vondelpark and plenty amenities. There was a tram stop a few minutes around the corner that takes you into the centre in less than five minutes or you can walk there in about 20 minutes.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay here.

Came back to Amsterdam for out 10th Anniversary, and stayed in this hotel, we were put up in the Sigmund Freud Suite? Which was large clean and tidy, everything you'd need for a city break. Prior to arrival I made arrangements for chocolates and champaign on our arrival, both of which were fantastic. Ideally located in Vondel Park district, close to the museum district. Excellent location for tram stops to and from central station. Found the staff to be very pleasant and couldn't help enough. Would definitely stay here again.

The room didn't live up to the description or photos from the website. the bathroom was very disappointing, small and out of date, the cushions were thread-bare and the bed linen dirty. The wifi didn't work in our room. No complementary water etc.We expected a boutique hotel for the money we paid. If it wasn't for the helpfulness/friendlyness of the staff, we would have moved to an alternative hotel.

In a nice area, close to restaurants and pubs, and round the corner from Vondelpark, which is lovely. Reasonable walking distance from the museum district (we walked everywhere as we didnt feel we needed to use the trams) and just round the corner from a tram stop, so either way, easy to get to places. The staff were friendly and spoke excellent english. The decor is a little dated and the interior of the building is a bit shabby, but the room was clean, and for my stay this was literally just a place to sleep and we left early each day and came back late each night, so it was fine for this. The shower had very little separating it from the bathroom floor so water usually poured right out on to it.

Three problems. First, small issue, but they offer free wifi, which would have been useful for planning our days out, but it only worked for the first night and then after that we couldnt connect. Next, was i booked a double room as i was sharing with my boyfriend, but we got put in a twin, and when we requested a change to the room we booked we were told they just allocate you to whatever type of room is available, not necessarily what you booked. This seemed a bit silly, and i would have thought that they shouldn't offer the option of booking a double room if there aren't any available. Third problem, not a huge one, but there were only two tiny hand towels in the room when we got there, so we had to go and request bigger towels so we could shower. The next two days when they cleaned the room, they took the towels away and didnt replace them, so we were left with two tiny towels and had to go back to ask for more each time.

I probably wouldnt go back, but would instead find another hotel in the same area.

Room Tip: You'd be taking a chance on whether you actually get the type of room you request in your bookin...

Not very friendly people on the desk. Dificoult access to the building and the rooms. The beds are really old and the decoration is terrible and cheap. Very dark rooms you can barely see in the night with only one light. There is not a wardrobe. The toilet is very old too but clean at least. I dont think i am coming back to this hotel again.
