“Great Hotel in downtown Amsterdam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

Attended a company function in Amsterdam and stayed 2 nights. Ask for a room on the river side of the hotel for breathtaking views of the Amsterdam skyline at night. The room was comfortable, clean and well appointed. Breakfast was super. The bar on the 11th floor is a great place to have a nightcap. Very convenient to all the nightlife.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the riverside of the hotel

Great location, near Centraal Station, canal hop-on hop-off canal boats and many of the main attractions. We arrived really early but they had a room ready for us supposedly overlooking a courtyard, but I feel they could have made the courtyard more attactive. But we appreciated the early check in and the quiet room - at least we were not overlooking the railway lines. The room was comfortable and clean. We normally upgrade to an Executive room when staying at Hilton or Doubletree, but at 50 euros a night we did not think it was worth it becaiuse unlike other Hilton or Doubletree hotels, there was not a separate lounge for Executive guests. The extra 50 euros gave you a slightly better room, breakfast and a few beers in the room fridge. We did not eat in the hotel because we found the food ridiculously expensive (25 euros for breakfast, 35 euros for dinner, and even the cheaper cafe was, I think, 17 euros for fish and chips. So we found some great small cafes nearby and visited Molly Malones Irish Pub, just a short walk away, for dinners which were great. Would recommend this hotel for its location, comfort and cleanliness.

Thank you very much for your honest comments. First of all happy to confirm we will be opening an executive lounge soon, most likely in the mids of June.
Regret you feel our food & berage prices are high. We do offer high quality products and constantly make sure it's priced in line with similar restaurants and bars in the city.

Unable to give this hotel a top score as the staff did not seem to be willing to "walk that extra mile" to make sure that everything would be in 100% good order. We had a few complaints about the room not being cleaned untill very late (we're talking about late, late afternoon here!) and after a couple of reminders/questions to the staff downstairs. TV wouldn't work one day. Nothing happened! Had to fix it by myself at the end.... Alright, maybe it was just a silly complaint about the TV-set and that may be (I'm just speculating here) the staff are sick and tired of all the guests complaining about their unusual and at my opinion; silly, TV-sets. But, they should have come up to the room or call for a check! They're Hilton, aren't they? Or are they in real? Not just a outsourced branch?

Another negative, but this is not to blame the hotel. I cannot recommend this hotel to families or people travelling with small children or with people needing extra assistance (wheelchairs, blind, deaf). The whole area around the railway station is a traffic-jam from early morning to late night. You have to be light-footet and sober observant not to risking being run over by trams (spooky - they come without any noise!), busses, cars, lorries etc if trying to cross anyone of the nearby streets. And crossing streets, you have to. A lot!

Other than that, this hotel is fair enough. If you're travelling alone or with a grown up person, you'd be fine. Not good value for the money. It's pricy though. But that's not a secret! Best if you can get someone else pick up the bill, employer etc.

Room Tip: Ask for a room heading towards town, not the railway.

Most certainly, Hilton or not, our entire team is willing to go the extra mile. Making our guests happy is really what motivates us. Therefore disappointed to see we did not during your stay. On days with many check-ins, our housekeeping priortiy is set on cleaning rooms for new arrivals, making sure guests can check in at 15.00 hours. Because of this it can indeed happen, when the hotel is fully booked, other rooms are cleaned later in the afternoon. I do apologize for this, and agree, we could have made one exception. Hope you will give us a second chance to show your experience was not representative for what we normally show.

I was expecting a sound city centre hotel with the benefits of a chain (consistent quality), as opposed to a boutique hotel where one gets more individuality and greater variability in standard. The hotel delivered on the standard, but had some nice touches that I appreciated.

Firstly, there was none of the rip-off standards that one so often gets from hotels in a tourist zone. Drinks were reasonably marked up, without ripping the ring. On the package that we had the mini-bar was complementary. The in-room iMac, free Wi-Fi and reasonably cosmopolitan TV selection were useful and allowed us to keep in contact with the planet without people trying to charge us fortunes for tiny amounts of data. The room was small but had all useful requirements, and a great view over the city (from the 10th floor).

Some guests may find the noise from the Sky Lounge (on the 11th floor) disconcerting but this did not phase us at all. The Sky Lounge is a great place to meet people and having a view drinks while watching the workings of trains, trams, barges and busses as the city goes about its business.

Breakfast was of a good standard and had something for most tastes. The offering avoided the grease-fest that can be the mark of large chain-hotels. We also ate dinner in the hotel on one of the evenings and it met a good standard.

A major plus is that the Centraal is ... very central. The main station is right next door, the busses and trams are next to the station, and many of the city's attractions are within walking distance. More distant attractions are a short tram-ride away, e.g. we took the #16 to Museum Plein from where the Concertgebouw, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, etc. were in close proximity. We could have got there by canal boat as well.

The staff were professional and friendly. Ultimately, this makes the real difference - a poor hotel can be rescued by good staff and an excellent hotel can be ruined by poor staff. At Centraal the staff knew what they were doing, and delivered to a high standard.

We would certainly look to stay here again when we next return to Amsterdam.

Room Tip: If noise from the Sky Lounge will bother you then look for a room on a lower floor.

Hilton should keep their rooms standard across the world and not downgrade to adjust to "2 twin beds".

Clean, bright rooms, great location, awesome bar lounge on top floor. Good breakfast.

Good modern comfort in the heart of an old city.

Great start to our stay as check in was quick and the member of staff who served us was very friendly and helpful and gave us a very warm welcome.
We were allocated room 302 which is a disabled access room, it had more space, a big deep bath and a wetroom style shower which did leek a bit but was reduced by tilting the shower head, still the best shower i have ever used!
The room itself has a very comfortable bed and lots of convenient facilities. The skylounge is stunning inside with amazing views!
Overall we were very happy with our stay here, very disappointing to see other nitpicking reviews especially as the staff are so helpful and there are even comment cards for you to leave your opinions with an option to leave contact details for them to get back in touch, surely this is a better way to resolve your issues?

The check in at the hotel was terrible. Not enough staff did not get to the room until 4:30pm. The rooms are very basic and the staff does not seem to care. Parking is a joke. Love Amsterdam but this hotel is not what you expect from a Hilton property
