“Great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2012

We travel to Amsterdam regularly, and usually stay in small 2 star places in the red light district. With our usual hotels full, we found the Doubletree to be very well priced for summer in Amsterdam, considering the facilities (about £700 for 6 nights).
The hotel is well-located. Though we like being in the middle of the action, the Doubletree is just 5 minutes into the red light district, and perfectly positioned for Central station.
We received a very warm welcome, though personally the cookie wasn't for me - it might be nice to have a plain cookie for those of us who don't like chocolate. I had requested a smoking room, but they don't seem to have noted that. We were told we may be able to move the following day to one of their smoking rooms, but our room was so nice, we decided to stay put,
We were given a city facing room on the 9th floor, and the view was spectacular. I'm not sure where the reviewers were who complained of the noise from the sky lounge, as we heard no noise from it and were only 2 floors below it. In fact, we had no noise disturbance whatsoever, and the windows cut out all street noise when closed.
The room was roomy & bright, with the window spanning an entire wall. It had a very modern and stylish feel to it. There were even large metal shutters on the outside of the window, operated by switches in the room, but also apparently automatlically operated by sunlight, which must be to stop the room overheating. The room included an iron, ironing board, safe, hairdryer, fridge/minbar, tea & coffee making facilities (wide choice of speciality teas, as well as regular and decaf coffee). The imac pc/tv was good. We could get BBC1 & 2, but with the internet we were able to watch episodes of other programmes on youtube. Aside from this, we just used the free wireless network for the internet with our own gadgets.
We were informed that breakfast was complimentary, which was a surprise, as we thought we had booked room only, but we double-checked this and the hotel assured us the breakfast was included.
The breakfast was very good, offering: sausages, bacon, egg, potatoes, cheese & cold meats, yoghurt, fresh fruit, cereals, smoked makerel, smoked salmon, a wide choice of breads, waffles, pancakes, porridge, 4 types of fresh juice plus tea or coffee.

My only criticism would be around some of the breakfast arrangements: most mornings the table was set, but there were no teaspoons, so these had to be requested from busy staff, which took some time. The same problem meant that coffee was often hard to get (served by staff) and one morningwe had nearly finished eating before we got coffee. When at breakfast at the busiest times, they fully utilise groups of 3 small tables positioned close together (all seating 2 per table). Half the seating at these is on a long upholstered bench with a wall behind. Being in middle table feels cramped and, if you're the one sat on the bench, you have to squeeze through an 8 inch gap between the tables to get to the buffet - invarioubly irritating your neighbours by knocking things over on their table with your backside (or being irritated by same if you're the one at the end). One such morning, we found ourselves in the middle of a conversation between the occupants of the tables either side of us. I thing we were at these tables 4 of the 6 days we were there. We noticed other guests keen to negotiate themselves out of these undesirable tables. In all fairness, the days we were there outside of the busiest times, we were seated by the window, so clearly staff are aware of their limitations and use them as a last resort.
Despite those small niggles, we really liked the Doubletree. We thought the breakfasts were of a good standard and the rooms were clean, spacious and exceptionally well-equipped, with a fantastic view if you get one city-side. We would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: City side rooms offer great views, especially on higher floors. A small number of smoking rooms are...

We spent four nights in this hotel. The location is perfect.

The interior was fairly minimalist, however as long as you can get past the furniture this was a good hotel (especially for the price). We arrived here from Brussels and stayed at the Conrad, so this was aesthetically speaking quite a change. It met our needs, the service level was adequate (nothing jumps out as especially great or bad), the room was a bit on the small side (we were in a King Suite and it was by far the smallest room we stayed in during our one month trip throughout Europe), however the room did have great views of the city! Breakfast was free as an HHonnors Diamond member, however it was quite average. If you are staying here and you do not get breakfast with your room I would suggest walking across the bridge to the vast array of restaurants throughout the area.

For the price it was better than expected. Clean (it's fairly new so that was to be expected), adequate service, small rooms, with a very good location. It meets your needs but doesn't really wow you.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the city as there are train rails behind the hotel.

Location: This hotel is very well located, close to the central train station. It is within walking distance of most main attractions of old Amsterdam.

Rooms: The hotel rooms are diverse. There are rooms located next to the train tracks and therefore quite noisy (the 1st room we were assigned). Then there are rooms with a view to the inside courtyard that are quiet but very small, almost like a ship cabin (the second room we were assigned). As we had reserved for 7 days we went back to the reception and spoke to another person who finally offered us a large room with great windows and a view of the cycling path and canal. The rooms on that side of the hotel are quiet as there is no train or car traffic close by. Make sure to insist on a better room if you do not like the one you are assigned. In the end it was a great week.

Food: The breakfast buffet is awesome. This is the best that we've had at a hotel. The food for lunch and dinner at the hotel restaurant is very ordinary. As there are other good restaurants nearby it is worth going out to eat.

Room Tip: See review.

This was our first time staying in Amsterdam so we were not sure what to expect. As prior reviews expressed the train runs directly behind the hotel so it can be extremely noisy. We requested a room in the front part of the hotel and by doing so we were upgraded. The room we originally booked was facing the back end of the hotel. We had no problems with noise from the train with a room towards the front. Our room was very clean, with modern decor, free wifi, and a great view of the city. The fridge came with complimentary soda, heineken, and assorted snacks that were restocked daily. We liked that the hotel took a green approach and allowed you to reuse your towels, skip changing your sheets etc. However, we followed the directions that indicated we wanted to take part in this and they still brought us new towels and changed our sheets anyway. To me it defeated the purpose. My husband and I rented bikes from the front desk and had a great time riding around the city. We enjoyed the rooftop lounge and the staff there was very friendly. The hotel was very crowded with business conferences that were going on. I feel this hotel is more geared towards a business atmosphere than a family or vacation stay.

The cons
I usually don't complain but I think it is important to point a few things out. The back of the hotel which is where the main entrance is located, is on a street that I would not recommend walking down at night. Our reservation was supposed to include complimentary breakfast but they did not honor it when we got there. We tried to explain to them and showed them our reservation but they were not having it. The full bed in our room was nothing more than two twin beds pushed together. While I understand this is common for European countries, they were very uncomfortable, I couldn't even sleep next to my husband because the beds kept separating. The worst part was when I woke up in the morning I had four big bug bites on my feet.

This hotel is excellent for exploring Amsterdam. It is right next to Amsterdam central station and right in the heart of this city itself being a ten minute walk into amsterdam sqaure. The rooms were at a great standard with very comfy bed's and an apple imac computer with free internet access. The food was great, breakfast buffet in the morning with lots to choose from. There is a roof top bar in the hotel with a great view of the city and a funky atmosphere. Very ideal for a nice weekend away, although Amstersam itself is very expensive! and very cold in winter season!! overalll great hotel and will return if ever visiting amsterdam again.

Having finished a river cruise in Amsterdam and then needing to catch a train to Paris, Doubletree was the ideal choice. The service was helpful and pleasant.

The cookies at check in are to die for!

We had booked a Queen room and asked for an upgrade if there was one available. We were upgraded to a King suite with wonderful views of the city and canals. The suite was enormous, a huge increase on our cabin on the river ship.
I had some health issues and asked staff about Doctor availability, the advice was to go to the hospital and a taxi was arranged. Great advice and the hospital staff were amazing too.

We had meals at the hotel and the food and service were good.

The only down thing was we booked a wake up call and it didn't happen, lucky we were awake anyway

Nothing bad to say about this hotel at all. perfect location right beside grand central station and the canal taxis. staff were great, we knew we were beside the station so were a bit worried by the noise but when we asked would it be possible to have a room facing the city it was no problem. they also give you a cookie when you arrive! lol. we also phoned down to reception on our last day to ask for a later check out and this was given to us free of charge which we really appreciated. Rooms were clean and modern. We would definitely go back to this hotel if we visited amsterdam again.
