This hotel is ideally situated for walking around Amsterdam. Within walking distance of all major attractions. The rooms were very nice, with all the usual conveniences, including tea and coffee making facilities. The breakfast in the hotel was very good, but a bit pricey 16 euros, but they didn't charge for the young children. The hotel bar was small but ok for a nightcap. There were a few bars just down the road which did the usual snacks and drinks, the Luxembourg to name one was very friendly and good with the kids. about 15 minute walk to Anne Frank House. Throughly enjoyed Amsterdam, but look out for the bikes, and Trams, they come from everywhere! Get to the Anne Frank house early if you can, we were there just after 9am, and no queues and walked straight in, but we passed by later in the morning on a canal cruise and the queue was quite long. Madam Tussauds worth a visit, bit pricey but kept the kids entertained for a while.

I might have been spoiled after spending 5 days in an amazing hotel in London (the Queensgate), but the NH wasn't really anything to write home about. It smelled like cigarette smoke everywhere, from the lobby to the elevator to the room. The bed was not comfortable and the room just felt dirty. On the plus side, the room was larger than anything I've come across in Europe and reception was pleasant and helpful.

The best part of the hotel was its location -- it was central and allowed for easy access to all the majot sites.

I suppose if the price was right, I could make a reservation again. Maybe.

I don't know what the guy who said it stank and the location is bad was on about. The staff are helpful, the location is great and the luggage storage room was very good, they give you a ticket, unlike some other hotels i've stayed at.

It's a 5 to 10 minute walk max to the main areas of town, and all the good coffee shops. There's one just down the street called Kajinksy or something, nice friendly place.

I asked for a room with 2 single beds, when we got to the room it was one big bed but you could split them. The beds seemed soft enough to me, but after the days I had anything would have been ok.

I really don't understand it when someone says a room stinks, man, just go ask for another room. If you really want to be sure of success, do it when other guests are around.

I used TripAdvisor to scout this hotel, and as usual, I got what I expected. I'm going back at the end of May to celebrate my 21st...i'm glad I know how good the hotel is already!

Stayed here February 2 through 8, 2005 as part of a Gate1Travel package. We had newly refurbished rooms which were quite large by European standards. I thought this was very much like an American Chain hotel in that everything worked and the rooms and common areas were kept clean. I usually stay in Prinsengracht or Jordaan, and this hotel does not have the "character" of those areas, but a little character wears thin after 2 or 3 days of ascending steeply pitched stairs. The buffet breakfast was great, but I did not eat any other meals in the restaurant. There are lots of good restaurants in the neighborhood (including a very expensive French one next door). The Indonesian place across the street was fantastic and quite reasonable even in devalued US dollars.

Location wise, this hotel is ideal for tourists in Amsterdam because it is near everything yet still relatively quiet. The major tram line (Spui stop) is one block away and Albert Hejn supermarket is one tram stop away. Many restaurants and coffee shops right in the neighborhood; the major shopping street of downtown Amsterdam is two blocks over.

All in all, a great hotel. A little lacking in Dutch "quaintness" if that is important to you.

I stayed in this hotel for a short weekend in March 2005, the locations very good, right in the centre of Amsterdam (within walking distance of the Central Station) the room are very small (and the bathrooms even smaller) although spotlessly clean. Didn’t have a breakfast in the hotel so can’t comment whether they are good or bad (there is a very good Dutch bar approx 100 metres up the road next to Bobs Youths hostel that does very nice breakfast though, sorry remember the name in Dutch but translates to the ‘crew lounge’ or similar in English. There is a ‘mini red light district’ at the rear of the hotel, but this wasn’t a problem, and the carpet throughout the hotel is positively disgusting…..enjoy your stay.
