“A monument to Amsterdam's seafaring past….”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2014

The history of Amsterdam and the Dutch East India Company is both rich and complex, and the National Maritime Museum does an excellent job at bringing it to life. The two must see sections are the interactive history of the VOC and the 'Amsterdam' - a replica of the East Indiaman wreaked off the coast of Hastings. The first, the history of the VOC, uses the traditional display cabinets and information boards merged with multimedia displays that introduce new characters or sections as you move around the exhibit. It is both informative and interest - just what you want from a museum! This is topped off by the replica of the sailing ship moored just outside the building. Fully rigged it allows you the opportunity to explore the entire vessel and see for yourself what it must have been like to live and work onboard.
During our visit there was also an excellent exhibition looking at the Dutch involvement in the slave trade - I'm not sure if this is a temporary exhibition or permanent but is certainly worth seeking out.

“Interactive and enjoyable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2014

This was a wonderful place to visit. We spent time on the ship, explored the interactive displays and marvelled at the clever use of multimedia. The shop was well laid out and the food in the cafe was good solid fare. Overall, as good as I've seen anywhere and it does the Netherlands proud maritime history a great service.

“Sailing ship is the star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2014

More modern than expected. The ship is a great attraction especially for the children. There is an exhibition on the Dutch slave trade which is quite informative. The restaurant is well frequented offering food to suit all budgets.

“A must for complete Amsterdam trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2014

Together with the canal museum, bible museum, this completes a good Amsterdam history. The city built on trade, and of course, the slave trade, and ongoing links with former colonies, Surinam and East Indies. Thought provoking interactive slave exhibition to rival Liverpool's excellent one.
