the build is fantastic , lots of nice exhibitions quite a few are interactive,It explains the history of the Dutch East India company and how the Dutch became such an influential trading nation. but De Amsterdam a full size replica of the original ship which was sadly wrecked of the southern coast of England is the star. The museum is good for children and adults alike . Well worth a vist.

The museum is very nice but we would have appreciated more written informations ex on navigation instruments in order to make the visit even more interresting. The visuals were nice but the written information for interrested visitors were missing

“A faniastic vieuw in the Dutch Maritime history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

When you think of the Netherlands, the first thing that may come to mind is dikes. But think about the sea behind the dikes and how much of Dutch prosperity, culture and identity is owed to the people who saw the opportunities the sea gives us and sailed out to seize these opportunities. Het Scheepvaartmuseum, The National Maritime Museum, tells their stories.

“surprisingly interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Went to this museum out of curiosity but found it a good, well priced visit (reduced price for senior citizens!). In parts it was too technical but nevertheless there were also some very interesting parts. The replica ship visit is well worth the time (watch your head) and the collection of old master ship paintings is outstanding. Avoid the overpriced cafe.

“A Beautiful museum shows how you can use tech to teach.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Perhaps a small caveat is needed. The Scheepvaart Museum is clearly aimed at a younger and/org foreign audience that has not been inundated by the history of the Dutch Golden Age. If you are Dutch, or a history buff, you might find the museum lacking in depth. That said, on with the review.

The Scheepvaart Museum has recently been completely modernized, and it has used this opportunity to incorporate modern technology to augment their collections. The result is wonderful. Entering the complex from the South, it has been divided into 4 sections by wind direction. Each section has an overarching theme. One for Children, one for History and one for the story of shipping today, the Southern section is the entry and exit. These sections surround a beautiful covered courtyard that can be used as a base from which you can choose what you want to visit first. This is a great feature, as you can pause between exhibits, get your bearings and family together, have a sandwich and trek on. Everything is well thought out and easily accessible.
The exhibitions themselves are interesting and made accessible by short stories that can be heard through the press of a button in both English and Dutch. A lot of maps and books and even globes have been scanned and digitized. This makes it possible to closely examine 400 year old works, which is both interesting and an addictive time-waster.
Video footage, audio recordings, computer interfaces are all used in a very clear and wonderful manner to tell the story behind the different exhibits, although as mentioned, this causes the information to barely scratch the surface. It would be great if the digital media used were extended so that visitors could choose how much information they would like to read about certain subjects.
There are a few minor problems I had during my visit. The biggest one being the fact that exhibits seem more or less random. There is not an overarching narrative, even though it would be very interesting to (for example) link the section on navigation, problems with longitude and the globes. The other problem is the fact that I fear that during very busy times, the digital additions and guides can become bottlenecks for traffic.
To conclude this review, I can wholeheartedly recommend this museum to all people with an interest in history and specifically naval history. The building and exhibits are wonderful and the facilities are of a very high standard. There is some room for improvement, but overall, this museum can serve as a standard for any museum on how to modernize and engage your audience.
