On a city break in Amsterdam with 2 children aged 4 and 6, we had read the blurb on the Nemo and were really looking forward to visiting. it didn't let us down.
We arrived early - 9.15 and having first located the lockers - 50 cents - and invaluable to keep our coats and bags in we then had a coffee in the ground floor cafe with its great views and welcoming staff. The map said one important thing - everything must be touched! With this in mind and very excited kids, We headed upstairs. The lab was our priority as our daughter loves to do experiments. This didnt open until 11am which then gave us plenty of time on the first floor to get interactive.
Standing in a giant bubble is a must. All the other experiments are good fun. We refuelled on the lab floor. €1.50 for a slush puppy was more than acceptable and a sensible kids portion. Coffee isn't great but then I have found a god coffee hard to find in Amsterdam full stop. Carnation milk is popular here but not with me!
We ended up being 5 mins late for the lab but it was only a 15 min queue. Each child chooses an experiment, wears a lab coat and goggles and gets to work on their chosen subject. All children under 12 must be accompanied. After the experiment you clean up and leave. We hopped straight back in the queue and after 20 mins were back in.
It then got to 12.15 and the queue was no longer acceptable to our 2 hungry children. Lunch for us was hot dog and chips at the roof restaurant. €3 for a dog and €2.50 for chips. All ok for a snack meal but I missed any form of healthy option. They do sell chilled ciabattas and small tuna pre packed salad. I really wanted fruit but hate paying €2.50 for melon pot. An apple would have been a nice offer.
Back downstairs it had suddenly become VERY busy indeed. The lab queue was out of the question. Other games were tricky too. Us Brits with kids that are happy to queue and be polite may struggle at times!
We left at about 2.30 after a trip to the shop. Our kids were on sensory overload and we reckon we got them out just in time. A meltdown was imminent.
A water bus back to town completed the day.
Nemo is woth a trip to Amsterdam for us alone. We will be back.
