“high-tea at the InterContinental Amstel Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2011

For the 2nd time this year I enjoyed the high-tea at the most famous hotel in Amsterdam. Beautifull located on the Amstel River nearby the Carre theater.
The high tea is the perfect opportunity to relax and having a chat with friends or familiy.
The food for example : sandwiches - scones - foccia - wraps - all kind of sweet assortiment -
cake - chocolates and the warm side dishes as there were quiche - croquet - spring roll where all of excellent quality. Different types of tea, with a little explanation from which country or area. When you are staying in Amsterdam with you lover or just a friend is the place to keep in mind.

Great old fashioned hotel with understated impeccable service, beautiful rooms, quiet area and silent for sleep, good facilities for small meetings.Food also excellent. Not in city centre (an advantage from my perspective).Expensive but worth it.

Beautiful property. Flawless, friendly, competent service. Great food options from La Rive, to the Brasserie, to room service. Would have given 5 stars, but the internet was not perfect. You can have free low speed internet, which is maddeningly slow, or you can pay 25 euros per day for high speed internet. Even paying for high speed, there were a few interruptions in service. Hotel was very quick to fix interruptions though. Also, this hotel is not as centrally located as some, but it's not a bad walk into city center, it's quite close to public transportation, and at least for me, it was kind of nice to be a bit removed from the clamor of downtown. So location was not a negative for me, but may be for others.

Beautiful hotel located by the river. Staff very friendly and took time to show me the room (only experienced this before with Gritti Palace in Venice). I was upgraded to the river view room even without any status (rarely use IHG). Room is relatively small by American standard, but ok with just one person. Bathroom has separate shower room (bath tub in the main bathroom). L'Occitane toiletries. Hotel is a little far from city center attractions, but within 20 to 30 min walk along the river to the museums (Rijks, Van Gogh etc). If you have the Amsterdam card, the Blue Boat canal cruise included in the card is also very close to the museum area. On my way back from the museums I stopped over at the Heineken Experience and had a good time.

It doesnt get any better really. Definitely a top notch hotel in every respect. We used our points to stay and loved it. Very quaint 19c styling. We were only here for a few nights, but would highly recommend to anyone. Using points only made it better. We walked from the train station and it was about a 25 minute walk. Airport was about the same by taxi....we did both!

This hotel is already for many years the top of hotels in Amsterdam. It's not modern, hip & stylish..... But it's classique, the service is very good and you really get the 5 star deluxe feeling. The butlers, valet, breakfast, rooms, swimming pool..... all seems perfect. A must go is restaurant La Rive - fine dining and nice service as well. Lovely dishes and really a 2 star Michelin address @ the Netherlands.

Room Tip: facing the Amstel river is the best

After several stays at truly dreadful hotels in Amsterdam, I returned to the Amstel, and was very pleased that little had changed. Indeed, while it is not cheap, I believe the prices are more in line with reality now than they were a few years ago. The decor is over-the-top classic in many ways, but this fits the historic building well. The location is lovely, with canal views presumably from many of the rooms, and it is remarkably quiet. The service is casual but efficient. The exception to this is breakfast, which is remarkably out of sync with everything else in the hotel: the service is uneven (one waiter is wonderful and helpful, one is surly, the other gossips loudly within earshot of diners), and the buffet spread is dull (as a guest at the table next to mine said: they can't do better than this in the best hotel in Holland?). That aside, I would recommend the Amstel as the best hotel to stay in Amsterdam.
