Owner description: This museum (also called Our Lord in the Attic Chapel) is housed in a charming canal house with 17th-century period rooms and, as a surprise to many visitors, a clandestine church in the attic, which was used by the Roman Catholics who were not allowed to worship publicly after 1578.

“Well worth a visit!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2014

Wow! This is a gem. I'm so glad I read the reviews before visiting Amsterdam and decided to visit Our Lord in the Attic. First, it's a great chance to see the inside of an old canal house and get some sense of how the people lived in the 1600's. Second, the house and the church have a great story and give you a good sense of this aspect of Amsterdam history. The church built across the attics of three canal houses is amazing, and very well-preserved. The self-guided tour is very informative, engaging, and easy to use. As other reviewers have said, the stairs are steep and narrow, and might be very difficult for the elderly.

“Neat piece of history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2014

I was surprised there weren't more people here. The audio tour is nicely done and the church is really interesting. One of our favorites. Tip: Admission is free with the iAmsterdam card.

The skill of building a place of worship, keeping Christians hidden from persecution was quite extraordinary.

“Our Lord in the Attic”

This small church is a testimony to creativity and determination to worship. The church is beautifully preserved. It is another Dutch museum that immerses you in history and culture.
