“Great for wandering”

Fantastic district of Amsterdam if you're there to soak up the architecture and atmosphere. Lovely old houses, beautiful canals and lots of interesting places to dip in and out of.

“The best experience in Amsterdam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

Walking through this neighborhood is an endless pleasure ... a huge variety of amazing houses , art galleries, small 'brown' bars and, last but not least, ....... a sweet honey stroopwafel at a bakery facing a canal.
Don’t miss a walk in the “nine streets” district, one of the city’s most picturesque shopping areas!

“Lovely Neighborhood”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

Lovely neighborhood to stroll though and find a cafe to enjoy a meal. Within a short walk from the Anne Frank House. We found a grocery store here - Jumbo. A great grocery store if you are looking for snacks or food cheaper than what you can find in convenience stores. Also a nice selection of Danish snacks to take home for gifts. Great pricing on Stroopwaffles (8 individually wrapped for Euro 1.75).

“We lived here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

I like everything about the district. Both very quiet and comfortable and practically in the center of the city. Close to all major attractions and at the same time full of authentic Amsterdam chic.

“Fascinating area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

This is a fascinating area to wander through, lying along the main canals to the immediate east of the centre. The streets are narrow, the pavements even more so, and there are bridges over the canals. So you have to watch where you are walking - not least to avoid being run down by a bicycle or falling over a group parked at some corner! But it's all part of a very vibrant area. The area is home to a number of excellent restaurants and cafes and to some interesting shops - we ate there one evening and bought some good items produced by local craftspeople. There are several "hofie", hidden courtyards with almshouses, some quite old and all very peaceful. Unless you have endless time, it's worth carrying a guidebook or map with walk routes in it so that you can cover some of the best streets andfind cafes, shops and "hofie".
