Just returned from the Canal House.Stayed for 3 nights in room 15 - a small but perfectly formed room, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the canal. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and shower nice and hot.

The hotel is full of nooks and crannies and antique furniture - the dining room is absolutely beautiful. Breakfasts were great particularly the coffee and madeira cake.

Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Absolutely no complaints.

A perfect hotel in the most beautiful part of Amsterdam

The Canal House Hotel is an elegant, beautifully furnished, small hotel in an ideal part of central Amsterdam. Within easy walking distance for public transport and many tourist attractions, yet in a quiet canalside street. We were nicely welcomed and offered a choice of two rooms. Our room was clean and comfortable and overlooked the garden which must be delightful in the summer months. This hotel is certainly different from the usual large hotel chains with boxes pretending to be rooms!
Criticisms? Yes, it was expensive for a three night stay. Especially as one of our nights was a Sunday when there were not many guests and it was the Winter season. No discounts were offered. Breakfast on the Saturday morning was reasonably fine when the hotel was busy and there were an adequate number of staff. Bowls of fruit straight out of a tin though? Fresh fruit doesn't cost so much more! The following two mornings went downhill for service and food running out. At our last breakfast I was continually visiting the kitchen to ask for things and almost donned an apron to get things moving! Canal House Hotel, if you are employing foreign workers give them more training in understanding what guests are asking for.

Apart from that, a lovely experience to stay here and this hotel is recommended to anyone who wants something elegant, surprises around every corner in its decor and in the heart of Amsterdam.

One other must do is to have dinner at the restaurant 'Lieve'. Just a short walk away. An amazing dining experience. Not to be missed! We loved every minute!

Management response from Janice De Geir, Public relations

Hello , in response to the criticisms the guest voiced, the guest had reserved the room online with an internet booking through an agent , the Canal House cannot be responsible for any commissions which the agent may have charged. Also we are a small hotel and cannot offer the same deals as larger hotels are able to. Point two , the Canal House is in the Netherlands and so " foreign " staff as in , not English are actually expected outside England. All staff speak English .
Also we have a large fresh fruit selection on breakfast for the guests.
Thank you for the positive remarks we do try to create a home from home forour clients.

The Hotel is set on one of the beautiful canals about 10minutes from Central Station. The two scottish ladies (i think they were scottish) couldn't have been more helpful. I had a lovely double room, very spacious with flat screen TV and a huge white marble bathroom (room 19). Breakfast was served in the most amazing lounge, very smartly laid out with grand piano taking centre stage. I wasnt offered a cooked breakfast but i was more than happy with the buffet selection on offer. Great hotel, great location and very friendly staff.

My husband and I, older travelers, stayed at the Canal House for a week in October. We prefer hotels with some personality as opposed to the sterile, impersonal atmosphere of the large chains. The Canal House was perfect. The staff was accommodating and friendly, the breakfast (and the breakfast room!) was marvelous. Our room was large, comfortable and overlooked the garden. The location is within walking distance of almost everything we wanted to see in Amsterdam. I would highly recommend this hotel.

My wife and I stayed at the Canal House for 3 nights in November of 2007. It is in a wonderful location. It's owners are very genial and helpful. It is easily walkable from Centraal Station if you are reasonably healthy and your luggage rolls well on cobblestones. Please be advised that the rooms do not contain a television set, so if you wear yourself out during the day and expect to relax watching TV in the evening, it is not an option. The breakfast was great and the staff helpful and friendly with the exception of one of the people at the front desk we nicknamed Frau Bleuker. Maybe she was just not having a good day that day. The rooms were very basic but clean. I have mixed feelings about the Canal House but I would stay again if the price were a little better. I would recommend it highly if you like and are familiar with the neighborhood.
