“Very nice boutique hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2012 via mobile

We really enjoyed our time at this charming boutique hotel. Lovely neighbourhood. Rooms were purple and black - loved that colour scheme! We had a king bed which was incredible - it was hard to get up every day! The staff were very helpful and pleasant. I would definitely stay again!

Very good location in an interesting part of town. Upgraded to an exceptional room overlooking the Canal. Beautifully furnished, nice touches, very helpful reception. Garden looked great though weather wasn't. Would definately return.

Good location, good service. Unfortunately, the rooms are quite bizarre. We were first put in room number 3 (a "Great Room). It was a nice room, however, it is on street level, facing the street and directly over a storage cellar. The room was extremely noisy (I'm from Manhattan and can deal with noise). It was impossible to sleep as there was car/pedestrian noise all night. We were moved to room number 9. This room was an interior room. What I was not expecting, however, was the lack of a bathroom ! The tub/shower and sinks are in the middle of the room. Very bizarre. If any water from the shower splashes it ends up on the bed ! I was initially charged 400 euro/night for both rooms until I reminded hotel staff how ridiculous the room was. They lowered the rate on the second room to 350 euros/night which is still too high for this level of room. We stay in several 5 star hotels/year and have never had such an experience. Would have expected this room to cost in the 250 euro/night range. Breakfast was also somewhat lacking in quantity and quality. Overall, disappointed with our stay. Will not return.

Room Tip: upper level room. Get a bathroom that is actually a bathroom !

We (meaning me) left it way too late this time around and after looking at a few designer hotels the night before I basically had no plan. Bunny to the rescue. We had a place booked for a OK rate for that type of hotel. The room was fine if not a bit dark. The view was funny. Someone had taken a large black and white poster of one of the canals and placed it about 2 metres from our window on a concrete wall. We did get natural light and it was very quiet. So we only had 2 nights of the 3 sorted. I was keen to move hotels, but the service is what kept me... it is very good and that is rare in Amsterdam. We were well taken care of : from help with booking a new hotel (the reception rang up 5 hotels for us) to hiring bikes or just sorting out extra coffee to the room. The garden is amazing. Go there for a drink in the garden if you can get away with it. The rooms are tricky... most of them are small and dark. We moved up to a higher class room which was twice the price and half the size of the first room. They found us a room for the 3rd night thankfully. But anyway.. I will go back to this hotel. It is for the service. It is Amsterdam anyway.. you should not be staying inside the room too long.

Room Tip: Try hard to get a view! Not many rooms which is the charm, but not all are equally appointed.

Stayed here for 3 nights and it was stellar.

Located on a rather quiet street, we arrived via taxi but the hotel is a decent walking distance from the Amsterdam Centraal train station and close to restaurants, bars, coffee shops and shopping.

The room itself was decently sized and wired with adjustable dimmed lighting controls for customized ambiance. The aesthetic is dark with a fusion of classic and modern elements (Pro tip: bring your iPod/iPhone with some chillout/lounge music and dock it on the in-room Bose speakers for a nice soundtrack to your stay).

Minibar had a decent selection and price list. The toiletries box was a lifesaver as it included toothbrushes (which I forgot to pack), mini toothpaste and disposable razor and full-sized bath and body products.

The open view bathtub/shower is a novel concept, great for couples - but probably awkward if you're staying with family, friends or associates who can probably spy you bathing.

While there is an elevator, there are a sequence of small stairs you have to take, to get to and fro places, which is pretty typical for older European buildings. Wifi was free, public and of decent speed. The hotel itself was very quiet and at times felt like we were the only guests, which was nice.

The complimentary breakfast was so-so. It was the cold European fare of meats, cheeses and cereals with juices, coffee and made-to-order boiled eggs. It would have been nice to have more variety, or at the very least some morning champagne or prosecco to make mimosas with. There is a bar/lounge on site but no restaurant or room service outside breakfast.

Would I stay here again? Absolutely. Canal House has perfectly embodied the concept of what a boutique hotel should be, still some very minor wrinkles to iron out, but otherwise it was absolutely great.

First, I just want to say that this is a beautiful hotel right on a canal that is in a great location; very close to the Anne Frank House and other attractions.

We were upgraded to a beautiful room (room 21) that had the original wooden eaves and the hoist that all the old Amsterdam houses have to bring in furniture. The room was lovely and the bathroom was great. The room was very dark (black and purple was the color scheme, but it worked). It included specialty hair products, soaps and lotions from the owners' own private line. The TV had a few BBC channels, which was great for English speakers like us. Breakfast was OK - bread, croissants, pastries, dry cereal, oatmeal. Hard and soft-boiled eggs were available if you asked.

Now to the negative - if you have any kind of problem with stairs, this is NOT the hotel for you. You have to walk up a flight of stairs to get into the hotel. You have to walk up a flight of stairs to get to the breakfast room and the elevator. Once you get off the elevator, you have to walk up or down a flight of stairs to your room. This is not very clear on the website. I have a bad knee and was miserable every time I had to leave and come to the hotel just because of all the stairs. Unfortunately, we won't be staying at this hotel when we're back in Amsterdam in October and it's only because of the stairs.

You can't get much better than this location-wise in Amsterdam! Three canal houses converted into a hip hotel, with an urban chic garden at the rear where you can enjoy cocktails in the evening. Close to all the city sights, but away from the noise. No restaurant, but there are plenty of good places to eat nearby.

Room Tip: Try and get one of the garden rooms
