“Bid for a 5 star hotel, but was awarded a 3 star hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

My husband and I and another couple traveled to Amsterdam for a long week-end in June. After researching hotel prices for central Amsterdam, we decided to bid on a 5 star hotel in the area of town we wanted to stay with a well-know travel service. We mistakenly assumed that a 5 star hotel REALLY meant a 5 star hotel as described by this travel service, i.e. luxury linens, amenities, service.
We were awarded the NH Barbizon Palace and after reading reviews (and seeing some guests' pictures) of the hotel on a variety of travel sites, I was horrified. The positive comments focused entirely upon the hotel location, very few positive comments about the hotel accommodations and service. I realized that we were "stuck" with the hotel awarded and just determined to grit our teeth to get through the two nights.
Prior to our arrival, I had sent an e-mail to the hotel requesting non-smoking rooms, king beds and a quiet location. When checking in we were pleasantly surprised to learn that our requests had been noted in our reservation and that although arriving early, that our rooms would be available at about 11:00 a.m.
Our rooms were comfortable (on the large side for Europe) and clean with comfortable bedding, and the hotel staff were friendly and helpful, but not 5 star by any stretch of the imagination. A solid 3-3 1/2 star, but definitely not five star.
As noted in other reviews, the location was perfect, a mere 5-10 minute walk from Amsterdam's Centraal station, very close to good restaurants and bars, a short walk to the Red Light district (which was even more seedy than I remembered it).
So, bidder beware when bidding on a five star hotel on travel websites. These websites accept the hotels description of itself, no matter how lofty, and does not do the "due diligence" to ensure that their customers get what they are paying for.

Room Tip: Request an "inside" room away from elevators. Also, smoking is pervasive in Amsterdam, so...

This 5 star hotel was excellent. It was located opposite central station which meant we were close to everything. The reception staff brill they were veryfriendly, efficient and accomodating and we were even given a free upgrade as our original room wasnt ready. The room was clean and spacious. It was on the second floor at the front. Yes there was a little noise at night but the windows are secondary glazed... so it wasnt to bad but hey were are in a lively city, it didn't keep us awake and if you want silence then a city break is not for you. The room was tidied and restocked with toiletries and teas and coffee everyday. And clean towels fresh everyday. The consiege was great he made our restaurant reservations on request. Sea Palace chinese is a must and sorted out luggage. We couldn't reallyfault this hotel and overall was a very enjoyable stay. We would definitely stay there again.

I have had the pleasure of being the organiser of an annual global conference with NH Barbizon Palace as an excellent venue. The hotel is located conveniently in the heart of Amsterdam, which provides easy train access from the Airport and a great possibility for a good combination of work and pleasure. The staff has been extremely serviceminded and very helpful. I will receommend this hotel to anyone for the same purpose.

Stayed here for a 2 night break. Position fantastic across the road from Central Station. Ideal to explore all the city on foot. No problems with check in receptionists polite courtious. Room was very clean and ample sized. Bed really comfortable We had a back room in the main older part of the room so quite but not the best view. Rooms and bathrooms really could do with a facelift but not a major problem 5star not quite I would expect bathrobes at least. Didnt eat or drink here so can not comment on these Breakfast round the corner opposite the bridge at the organic resauarant is 100% recommended fantastic food. Sunday 5 o clock check it great except they did cut our key off but no problems when I went back down to reception
We booked on late rooms via secret hotel so got a good deal do not think it is worth the full price. But would stay again on a cheap deal

We stayed here for 2 nights, great location opposite the train station just on the edge of the red light district, we arrive at 10 am and our room was ready and we were advised at check in that NH hotels have a late check out on Sundays 5pm which was great as we did not fly home until 8pm. The price was very reasonable but i would not say the hotel is 5 star. Some great local bars just around the corner too. Would stay here again next time we visit Amsterdam.

The is a pretty property that is in a great location. The concierge was very helpful with directions and we purchased tickets for our canal cruise through him instead of standing in a long line at the dock. We were able to walk all over Amsterdam from this hotel. My only complaint would be at check in. Even though we had prepaid for a king size bed we were told that there weren't any available upon our arrival. I understand there isn't a guarantee but it was in the manner the front desk handled the situation that was upsetting. This is not an inexpensive hotel and the staff was borderline rude at check in. Once I complained about it we were "upgraded" or a king size room became available. I am not sure which one. The room was lovely with nice, dark curtains allowing us to sleep in. Aside from the front desk a very good experience.

the location of the hotel was excellent, opposite Central station, which is the hub of the local tram network and where you arrive in from the airport. you can get to any of the main tourist attractions within 15 minutes by tram. Then if you choose to have a wander through the streets you can always follow your way back to central station by tram. Hotel itself was clean and quiet, despite it being next to a main road. I thought it was a little on the expensive side but not so much that I would say it was totally overpriced. Lots of interesting bars and restaurants nearby. So if you eat outside of the area get the last tram back at about 12 and have a nightcap locally.

Room Tip: Ask for a room by the canal (1 to 6) nice view and quiet there.
