Myself and my husband stayed in here for new year's eve. There seem to be a lot of reviews on here about the loud noise and disruption from the red light district. Which I feel is like buying a house in the middle of the M25 and complaining about the traffic! In fairness we did not hear a huge amount of noise (other than fireworks etc.. from New Year Celebrations).
The location is excellent, 5 minutes from the station (if that) and central to everywhere you’d want to go really, 10-15 minute walk to museums, 2 minutes to red light district, 30 seconds to the nearest coffee shop!!!
The reception area was very impressive and the staff were friendly, although were a little overwhelmed and possibly could do with taking more note of ‘who’s next’ as we Brits are very particular about queuing- Europeans not so much!
The only word of warning I have is… unless you cannot cope with a short walk or going a few hours without a ciggie to DO NOT get a smoking room, we did and arrived on the smoking floor, where as soon as the lift doors opened it stank, and really nasty stale smoke smell, which is incredibly difficult to hget out of fabric anyway, but I think it is something that could be sorted by management, by way of filter system or timed air fresheners. We have stayed in smoking rooms before and none have been that bad. There was a problem with our room when we arriveD:
a) the smell of stale fags,
b)there was no safe (which apparently there weren’t in any of the smoking rooms!
c) the cleaners could have done a better job as there was some stuff left behind in the room, presumably that the last residents didn’t want to risk flying home with.
However, we called and this was rectified immediately and we were moved to a non-smoking room, without charge or any fuss. This room was LUSH, really nice.
There are always going to be issues from time to time with hotels of the size of NH, it is the way these issues are dealt with which matters and I cannot fault NH for their swift action to resolve our issues. I would recommend this, the price considering the location and standard of accommodation is great, yes there are nicer hotels in Amsterdam, but they charge a hell of a lot more.
Don't chosing a smoking room, unless you really really have to.
