“NH Barbizon - mediocre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

Average room. Poor amenities - shampoo and soap smelled awful. Noisy. Breakfast average. Overall a completely average experience. The saving grace is that it is close to the central station. Furniture and flooring was dated and tired.

When we checked into the Barbizon Palace in Amsterdam, the desk clerk asked if we wanted a room with a view. Well of course we wanted a room with a view! We were cautioned that it might be noisy but we took the room. As it happened, the room overlooked a canal and we were able to wave to boatloads of tourists sailing by. It was fun. The hotel supplied us with earplugs but they weren't necessary.

The room were fine and the hotel generally was appealing. Don't bother with the expensive buffet breakfast. You can find breakfast much cheaper in little cafes near the hotel.

The location of this hotel is perfect. It is within easy walking distance of Central Station and Dam Square.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a room with a view and try to get a room above the ground floor level.

The hotel locates in the very center of Amsterdam near to central train station. It's just just next to Redlight distrcit and 10 minutes walking to Dam square. The hotel staffs very friendly and breakfast was very good. I'd like to offer this hotel to any travellers......

Absolutely fantastic location near main station and red light district. And surprisingly quiet. The concierge was excellent, but the hotel was a let down. Staff were too busy to deal with us over the whole weekend. Gave up trying to get a drink at the bar. Spa was closed. Rooms were once nice, but had things like the safe removed and nothing in mini bar. And the free wifi was a nightmare to get working with password changing daily. I wouldn't stay again. Not worth the money.

We recently stayed in the NH Barbizon Palace in Amsterdam. My husband is a T12 paraplegic and we had had a terrible experience at the Hotel Ibis which is next to the train station in Amsterdam. The room was atrocious (not much more than a college dorm) and they were stunned that we didn't like it. As our accommodation was pre-booked, they would not refund our money. We went looking while we were there and found the NH Barbizon Palace, so decided to give it a go this time. The room was well set up for the wheelchair (roll-in shower and rails for the toilet). The staff were very friendly and the rest of the hotel was well able to accommodate the wheelchair - including the lifts and the dining room downstairs. Overall it was a much more pleasant stay than the last time.

First off i flew in to Amsterdam late afternoon in preparation for an early meeting the following day about an hour via train from Amsterdam. This hotel is a great location for Centraal Station which was my main focus.
However upon arriving it was great for everything, as it was near to tours, the canal, bus route, bars, restaurants....
I had a quiet room away from main road which was great, the staff were very helpful and the room was a good size. - I would not say it was 5 star luxury as the rooms and corridors need a refurb but all in all a great hotel.

Room Tip: I was asked if i wanted a quiet room when i checked in and they explained that rooms at the front ca...

Other than the lobby and dining area, the hotel needs a general upgrade as it is not what you would expect of 5* hotel. Having said that, as a top end 3*/ low end 4* hotel, it is pretty good.

Location is a few minutes walk from the central train station and city centre. From the outside, the building is somewhat unassuming and does not have the hotel doorman you may expect from a 5*.

The hotel staff are very helpful although the the concierge/ reception do seem somewhat aloof as you walk past them.

Food is extremely expensive here and you are best off to go to one of the many cafes/ restaurants for breakfast/ lunch or dinner.

The rooms are reasonably sized, clean and the beds are comfortable. However, the air conditioning did not seem to work. Also, as I was on a business trip, I was not impressed with the WI-FI facilities, which seems to have very limited capacity (although it is free) - you would expect better for the price of the room. Moreover, I would have expected much more advanced in-room technology for this hotel which did not seem to have been updated for at least 15 years.

The gym is adequate so no complaints there.

I think the hotel was satisfactory and would be willing to stay there again but only if they reduce the room tariffs by at least 40% (based on the other hotels in the same area and of a similar quality).
