Booked NH Barbizon Palace on Agoda.com for 2 nights in Amsterdam following 4 nights stay at another hotel. It got chance to be a great hotel, but a lot of improvements will be required to make it great (or maybe good)
Reservation: Made first night reservation on Agoda.com at a good rate, but wanted to extend another night, so we went to the reception to extend one night. The best rate provided was higher than what i can get again on Agoda.com, and told them about it. The reply i got was, then book it online at agoda.com. I was quite shock by such reply, as i am already a staying guest at the hotel. Shouldn't they offer the rate i can get on third party website to an existing guests.
Location: Hotel got a great location. It is very near Central Station (walking within 3 minutes), city center as well as tram and bus station. It is very near to the fringe of the red light district (therefore to note, please remember to get a room which is NOT facing the red light district lanes, else the night can get quite noisy. I got a room which is facing red light district and it was quite bad)
Hotel and room Facilities: Exterior looks grand and nice, reception was quite nice too. Rooms are dated (carpet old and outdated design - red), TV is ca 15 inch CRT TV with some international channels. WIFI is free, but need password from reception and have to get new password every 24 hours. Room is of decent size, sheets are clean. Bathroom got a bad design, the glass barrier separating the bath tub and the other area actually result in water getting from the bath area to the rest of the toilet (a bit hard to explain, but its just a flawed design).
Services: Concierge services need improvement. On my checkout day, it was raining heavily outside, I asked them if there;s any shuttle service to the Central station (although it is just a 3min walk away) as it was pouring, and there is no way i can get to central station without getting wet and not to mention I have my luggage to carry with me. The reply i got from concierge was, there's no shuttle service, the station is closeby, i can walk there. Thus they are not providing any useful solution or offering any help. To make things worse, the concierge asked me to return them the umbrella i borrowed from them during the day. (thus not just not providing any solution, they remembered to collect the umbrella back from me!) At the end, i had to walk in the rain, and got myself all wet by the time i get to the central station.
Therefore, like i mentioned, this hotel got a chance to be a good hotel if they look out for areas that need massive improvement
Choose one not facing the red light district
