“Great location, very nice hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2012

I had read a couple of bad reviews here but I have to say we had no problems whatsoever, the location is excellent, right across the road from the train station and just on the edge of millions of shops, cafes and restaurants, or you can walk around if you prefer to stay away from the red light district. The room was big, clean and comfortable, we had an interior room and it was very quiet (the loudest thing was the air con... but that can be switched off!) we still had a window, granted there wasn't much to see but that wasn't a problem for us. We had a smoking room and as another user said there was a smoke detector in the room but it didn't cause a problem to us smoking at all... it's surely a legal requirement for the fire alarm smoking room or not... All staff were very friendly, we were given a plug adaptor to borrow when we asked to buy one, which was nice, the free wifi was also very useful. Didn't eat there as the food looked very expensive but that's not a problem as there are restaurants right out side. Yes TV was a bit old school but there were a good mix of channels for us English visitors. Overall a great place to relax during our trip, would go back! (spa is currently out of action which was a shame!)

Stayed at this hotel August 2012, just across the road from Centeral Station so handy for train from airport ( takes about 10 mins or 3 stops). Trams/Buses close by so you can travel anywhere.
Hotel Entrance is lovely, reception staff couldnt of been nicer or more helpful. Top marks!
Room was large enough and very clean, bathroom spotless nice toiletries etc.
Bed comfortable, free safe. Would of liked a more modern TV and maybe carpets could do with replacing but for the money we paid I was happy.
Eating there is very exspensive but plenty other places to choose from.
We would stay here again. All the staff are helpful and friendly.
More 4 star then 5 star the hotel.

Room Tip: Room 511 is a smokers room and looks over towards the station. Noisy when window open but quiet when...

Just back from a fab bank holiday weekend in Amsterdam.
Easily located hotel, Just a quick hop from the train station. Upon arrival, my partner asked if we could change our room to a smoking room and we were upgraded to a suite, for only an extra 55 Euros per night, bargain!! The bed was sooo comfortable as were the choice of pillows, we had a lovely view overlooking the busy streets, (no noise may i add). Also very clean, everywhere.
Breakfast was a little expensive but very enjoyable and really there is no rush to get you out, so take your time, fill up, and you wont need to eat until early evening.
Can't wait to return.

My husband and I stayed here in August 2012 and it was a great location. Easy to walk to nearly everywhere in the city. It's across from the train station which was also super helpful. The service was good but I think our room needed a bit of an update (carpet was old).

I would definitely stay there again and would recommend it for others.

This is a great location if your using the train and is close to the city trams. Our room was large , clean and comfortable. We. Were able to walk to the city sites but we enjoy long walks. If you dont like to walk the Trams are avalible near by.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2012

My husband, two friends and I booked a lastminute trip to Amsterdam and decided on the NH Barbizon Palaceas due to its 5 star rating and location perfect location for exploring the city. Centraal Station is a two minute walk from the lobby of the hotel making the transfer from the airport by trainapprox 30 minutes. The lobby of the hotel looked lovely and the staff were helpful and friendly, but upon entering the corridor to our ground floor room the first thing we noticed as the smell of bad drains! We soon realised that it was our bathroom (room 11) that may have been contributing to the smell as the toilet would just fill with water whilst the rest of the plumbing gurgled! The staff came to help immediately, but didn't really know what to do, so we went out for dinner in the hope that they would either move us (preferred option) or have resolvd the problem but the time we got back.

Upon returning tot the hotel we were informed that the problem had been fixed so we retired to bed. The noise from the canal and street opposite our room was terrible and in conjunction the gurgling from the bathroom (toilet sorted, gurgling remained!) it made for an interesting nights sleep (glad I had packed earplugs). Our friends reported that they had been provided with earplugs by the side of their bed - not an ideal sign! My husband and I decided to have breakfast in the hotel and nearly passed out when we found out it was €50! There are plenty of cafes near to the hotel, which are much better value.

The Barbizon is by no means a palace or anywhere near a 5 star hotel!

We will NOT be going back!

Room Tip: Do not stay in room 11!

My daughter and I had a 3 night break at hotel and really enjoyed it. Hotel easy to find - can see it from station - and ideally located for all sights. Room was very comfortable with top quality bedding and the air con was a godsend. Very clean. Only critisism was room on side of building so very dark and not enough lighting. Bedside lights only lit bedside tables so couldn't read in bed. Did not have breakfast as too expensivde 25E per person, so bought sandwiches and smoothies from lovely shop in station.

The 3 hr bike tour was great, but a bit scarrie. Cocktail cruise very expensive for 2 tiny cocktails and handful of nachos and tiny dips. Zoo was brill with animals running free and the butterfly house was magical to walk through. The tattoo museum was overpriced rubbish.
Market at The Pipe was rubbish. Spent 15 mins there. Just an excuse for the tacky clothes shops in the street to bring their junk onto the pavement. Trams easy to use, just hop on an buy an hour ticket for 2.4 E.

Room Tip: Rooms at side of building dark.
