Owner description: The Jewish Historical Museum is a modern museum of Jewish heritage housed in four monumental synagogues near Waterlooplein in the heart of Amsterdam. Three permanent exhibitions present the history and culture of the Jewish people in the Netherlands. In addition to the three permanent exhibitions, the museum always offers two great temporary exhibitions and the fun JHM Children's museum.

“Very interesting!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

Following advice from Ben on WW2 walking tours we visited this museum after the tour, It was closeby which was perfect. The museum was very interesting and had lots of video footage, personal interviews and artefacts. We spent a few hours touring this museum and got to know more about Judaism as well as Jews in Amsterdam. well worth the visit. You also get admission to The Portuguese Synagogue but we did not have time. There was also a audio guide which was useful.

“Excellent displays and guides”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

The admission fee included the audio guide which was excellent. The layout of the museum is a bit confusing as to where to start but go downstairs and look for signs to the Great Synagogue. We found the explanations for the items on display and how they related to the Jewish religion clear and concise. The Great synagogue main level covered all aspects of Jewish ritual and prayer. It included a combination of artifacts and photos and old film and videos. It took quite a bit of time to listen/read all of the information in the displays. Upstairs in the women's section of the synagogue was a history of the Jews in the Netherlands highlighting some famous people. You then walked across to the New Synagogue which told of the Jews in the Netherlands in the 20th century including WWII. Again there were artifacts. They had screens where you could learn about the items on display but there were only a few of them so you had to wait to use them. There was also a special exhibit about Jewish food on the first floor near the museum shop. It was organized by food items - kugel, cholent, pickles, etc. The displays contained an interesting combination of items, videos, memorabilia. They even had cookbooks available for browsing (some in English). It was a delightful visit. I would allow at least 90 minutes to 2 hours. We did not go into the children's section.

A memorial to the suffering of the Jews in Holland - should be visited along with Anna Frank's house.

“Even if you're not a kid, go see the kids section!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Absolutely agree with everyone else's reviews that this is a great museum, but I was really impressed with the children's museum, which was interactive, bright and fun. They also had areas where kids could take part in making challah (jewish bread for the sabbath), playing instruments and watching videos to understand what Jewish life is like. Well worth a visit.

“Excellent museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

This museum combines four former synagogues in the old Jewish quarter of Amsterdam, which might account for it somewhat confusing layout. (Hint: start at the lowest level and work your way up.)

The displays are well done and interesting, giving a complete portrait of Jewish life in the Netherlands over the centuries, without sugarcoating. Your ticket here will also give you access to the Portuguese synagogue across the street, which is still in use and also fascinating.
