After many disappointing hotel experiences, some in 'supposed 5 star hotels', I have to say that we loved this hotel! In my opinion, definitely worthy of its 5 star rating and providing a haven of calm in this great city. Classy and understated with traditional furnishings, informal atmosphere and excellent service by extremely professional, yet friendly staff. We had booked a deluxe room, which was very nicely appointed, but were lucky enough to be offered an upgrade to a Junior suite, for a very reasonable supplement, which was just beautiful, with three enormous windows overlooking a leafy canal and the biggest bed I've ever seen. We decided to have afternoon tea in the hotel's lounge bar, which was lovely and definitely worth indulging. We also had breakfast in the hotel's 'Cafe Roux' restaurant, which was excellent, but we didn't get the opportunity to try dinner there. With the menu created by the famous Albert Roux, the restaurant was stylish, but again understated and not too formal, which we liked. The only slight criticism may be that some of the rooms are starting to look a touch worn around the edges as it is probably a few years since the last refurb, but not enough to put me off recommending he hotel. In summary, this hotel is a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away off a leafy canal with it's imposing facade and central courtyard garden, yet only a couple of minutes walk from Dam square. We will definitely stay here again, when visiting Amsterdam next!
