“One of the best spots of amsterdam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

At a unique spot , in the center of Amsterdam, with most of the attractions at walking distance you find this special top star hotel, The Grand Amsterdam. From the moment you enter the court entrance you feel the special ambience. The staff welcomes you with respect and offer you all the service you are looking for. The room are located at either side of the hotel overlooking the canals, where despite of being in the center it's very calm at light. The restaurant's chef is preparng unique courses of top quality food combined with great wines suggestions. All in all , one of the best spots of Amsterdam

Thank you for your grand words about our hotel here on TripAdvisor.

We are very proud of the historical, uniquely “Amsterdam” ambiance and it delights us that you have experienced it as well. I hope that you had the time to explore our surrounding area, including all the hidden gems.

Our Chef de Cuisine of restaurant Bridges, inspired by Ron Blaauw, is passionate about creating great dishes and together with our Sommelier Jasper van den Hoogen the best food-wine combinations are selected.

All our ambassadors are grateful that you find Sofitel Legend The Grand to be one of the best spots of Amsterdam and we are looking forward to welcoming you back.

This is a wonderful hotel in a great location in Central Amsterdam, close to Dam Square and the Red Light district - a very easy walk to almost anywhere in Central Amsterdam.

If you are a classic rock fan, you will love all of the photographs on the walls. It's a who's who of rock 'legends'. Great history and beautifully done artistic portraits of legends like John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Elton John, The Who, etc. The rest of the interior is a luscious blend of modern, luxurious, and old world. Well done.

Our room was on the 1st floor and was a multi-level room. The bath and closet were on the entry level, and you walk down a few steps to the bedroom. There was a massive wall of windows with very high ceilings. Our bathroom did not have a tub, like some of the rooms do -- too bad, because that would have made my wife very happy. However, it was still very nice. The bed was super comfortable -- I believe it was a feather bed and we slept very well.

A couple of critical comments: They try very hard to up-sell you at check-in to get a 'bigger' room (I think 5m squared) bigger, or to get an apartment -- I think this was an upgrade of 250E or more. They really pushed this on all the guest checking in. Also, it was very cold while we were there and the heat in the room could barely keep up to stay warm enough. It took hours to warm up to where it was comfortable, but that meant keeping the think drapes closed.

All in all, it was a great hotel and I would definitely stay again. I'll review the restaurant separately, but very $$$$.

Thank you for choosing Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam and for taking the time to leave a review and magnificent pictures here on TripAdvisor.

I would like to inform you that during your visit we hosted the exhibition ‘Claude Vanheye – Famous Popstars in Amsterdam’ and that our next exhibition will feature work from a famous Dutch sculptor.

I am pleased to read that you liked the room and the Sofitel MyBed. The true secret of the concept is the combination of a mattress and a slatted bed base, a featherbed, a duvet, four pillows and pure white or ivory cotton percale linens.

We are grateful for the comments, because they help us in achieving an even higher level of service.

We hope that you will choose for us again if you pay another visit to Amsterdam.

Best regards,

We had dinner at Bridges and it was heavenly. The fish and vegetables were extraordinary. Creative, tasty and well put together. The sour dough baguette was real good. The service attentive but not overdone..the French influence of the chef was a real plus, the sauces exquisite .

The breakfast, on the other hand was marred by wait staff that wouldn't let you along. Everywhere there was someone asking what you want, good morning and was generally annoying . The people asked where my wife was when she didn't show up. One I never met before. One got my room number and kept calling me Mr. K.....) they were so intimidating that it was hard to get up and go to the buffet. One would volunteer to get something for

Dear guest, thank you for taking the time to leave a review of our hotel here on TripAdvisor.

It is a pleasure to read that your dinner at Bridges, inspired by Ron Blaauw, was heavenly and that the fish and vegetables were extraordinary.

The description of how you have experienced our breakfast is certainly not the normal level of service we provide and I would like to make my apologies for your entire breakfast experience. We take all feedback of our guests seriously and I want to assure you that we have taken action on the mentioned points.

We hope that we have the chance to prove to you that we provide the same attentive service in all our departments of our beautiful hotel.

Yours sincerely,

We stay for two nights at the Sofitel Legend The Grand. This is probably the best hotel in which I stayed. Everything is done to make the stay unforgettable.
It starts first with an efficient check-in. We were then accompanied to our room with some explanation of the history of the hotel. The room was well decorated, spacious and the bed was really confortable (thank you MyBed...)
We had dinner the first night at the Bridges restaurant (restaurant of the hotel). The majority of the dishes are seafood. We opted for seafood platters which were extremely good. If you need advice, don't hesitate to ask to the sommelier Jasper for his help in the choice of wine!
Breakfast is served in the restaurant Bridges. It was very high quality and with plenty of choice.
I highly recommend going to the historic visit of the hotel: not too long but full of instruction on the previous functions of the hotel.
The ckeck-out was also really efficient.

A special hotel with character and charm. Staff very professional providing for a smooth and pleasent stay. Rooms are well equipped with all necessary amenities of high quality.
I enjoyed my dinner with a selection from the raw bar as well as selection from Bridges, the main restaurant. However, the bar and restaurant interior was not in keeping with the "historic" charm of the hotel and as such a disappointment. The location is good with easy walking access to centrum, shopping areas and many cafes/eateries also in narrow side streets so plenty alternatives to the hotel bar and restaurant.

Your grand words here on TripAdvisor provide us great satisfaction.

It delights me to read that you have found our ambassadors to be very professional, providing for a smooth and pleasant stay.

The entire hotel is a blend of French elegance and stylistic Dutch elements. The French interior architect Sybille de Margerie, drew much of her inspiration from the lively colours of the famous mural by COBRA artist Karel Appel, which is displayed in the entrance of the restaurant area. There are many recurring themes within the hotel and restaurant. I am very sorry to read that the interior of Bridges, inspired by Ron Blaauw, was not to your liking.

We hope that the great location of Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is a good reason to choose us again for your next visit to Amsterdam.

This was our fourth stay at the Grand and 4 1/2 years since our last visit. Our last stay coincided with the beginning of the transition from the classic more traditional style of the hotel interior to its current modern open-plan arrangement. We knew on our last visit that the art-deco style decor and fittings of the restaurant were to be sacrificed in the transition so it was not a shock that the restaurant had changed. It was a shock to find that in contrast with the previous Albert Roux supervised restaurant, this new incarnation specialised in fish dishes, almost to the exclusion of anything else. One of us can't eat fish! (There appeared to be one vegetable item and one very expensive meat dish on offer on the menu). Fortunately there are plenty of options for eating-out in the area so there was no danger of starving. However, it was disappointing not to eat at the restaurant even once during our stay, as we should have liked. We probably bored the pants of the staff in talking about how beautiful the previous restaurant had been. Some staff remembered, some had seen pictures. It seemed to us like a huge loss. Other changes, in keeping with the modern theme, included low chairs rather than the comfortable chairs and sofas we remembered from earlier visits. On a positive note, a very welcome addition was the smoking room adjacent to the bar, where my husband could enjoy his new pipe purchased at the fabulous PGC Hajenius. Something of a well-kept secret - or so it seemed - this little room provided an alternative to standing in the desperate cold outside. Not to seem too old-fogeyish the hotel is bright and welcoming and there are wonderful photographic prints in the public areas. Our Superior room was modern in decor, of course, but very comfortable as before. The only negative was the temperature. Even when we turned the heat right down, it was too warm for comfort at night. We particularly appreciated the addition of a Nespresso coffee machine. It was wonderful to have coffee 'on tap'. We also appreciated the provision of mineral water daily - particularly helpful for us as we each take medication. The walk-in shower area was equipped with a grab-bar to accommodate disability - very helpful. The service was impeccable. Staff were friendly as well as efficient. Overall, this hotel is an excellent choice in terms of what it has to offer and in terms of its location. Though Dam Square is very near, there is plenty to explore by turning left, rather than right, on leaving the Hotel. Across the canal, before you get to the main thoroughfare of the Rokin, there are lots of places to eat and drink and interesting little side-streets and alleyways. As far as The Grand is concerned, on a nostalgiac note, I just can't stop wondering what happened to the beautiful art-deco fixtures and fittings!

Room Tip: If you have special requirements - like a walk-in shower - this is available.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this extensive review of our hotel here on TripAdvisor and I would also like to thank you for staying with us again after 4 ½ years.

I am very grateful that you enjoyed the cigar lounge, your room and the Nespresso coffee machine. Furthermore, our ambassadors do indeed extend a warm welcome and offer refined services.

Our restaurant Bridges, inspired by Ron Blaauw, was heralded as one of the top restaurants in the Netherlands within a few months of opening and I am sorry to read that the interior was not to your taste. Indeed, the restaurant specialises in sea food, however we do have some vegetarian and meat dishes on our menu. For the next three months, on our spring menu meat lovers can choose veal cheek and sweetbread or half Anjou pigeon.

We are thankful for your feedback regarding the temperature in your room. I have shared this with the engineering team and they will closely monitor the temperature in the entire hotel.

The ambassadors of Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to the hotel in the future.

Yours sincerely,

This hotel is an absolute gem . The decor ,standard of room was exceptional . It's central location was ideal . The friendliness and professionalism of the staff was better than any 5 star hotel that I have stayed in . As the owner of Champneys I think I am we'll positioned to be able to judge , this is an iconic hotel . It's also good value .
Our suite was very comfortable , only downside it did not ave Sky News . The bed and sheets really comfortable , we also had Butler service ,and that was really good . The concierge and reception staff very helpful . For business or a romantic break this hotel is fabulous .
We have already booked another weekend .
