We thoroughly enjoyed our five night stay at the Pulitzer. Our room had a very nice view overlooking the canal, though i need to point out that we were originally brought to a much less desirable room in the back of the hotel with absolutely no view (unless you count rooftops). While the first room was no doubt given to us to accommodate the roll-away for our 12 year old, we were happy to sacrifice on space to end up with a smaller though more impressive room with a view in the front of the hotel (and lucky the hotel could make a room switch during such a busy time). Although the bathroom was a bit small, the room was well appointed with all the necessities and a very comfortable bed. The concierge desk was very helpful in assisting with dinner recommendations and other activities. Overall the hotel is very nice and in a great location and has one of the best buffet breakfasts you could ever expect to find in Europe. All of the staff that we encountered (houskeeping, restaurant, front desk, etc.) were extremely friendly and helpful.

This hotel is constructed from a number of connected canal houses, so the room tend to be small, but nicely appointed. The staff all speak perfect English and are nothing but helpful. The biggest perk may be the location which is on a main canal just down from the Anne Frank House. This puts you within walking distance of everything in Amsterdam. The biggest downside is the price, which tends to be in excess of €200 per night.

If you can swing it, this is a nice place with a great location.

Having booked a deluxe room at the Pulitzer, we were very much looking forward to our one night stay. However, from the moment that we had to walk through a series of corridors that got darker and more tatty the further we went, our expectations were disappointed. Finally, having lugged our suitcases up a winding and dirty staircase we got to our room. It was small and smelt very strongly of smoke. When booking, I had ticked the non-smoking preference and neither of us felt comfortable in such a smoky atmosphere. When my husband returned to reception to ask if we could change rooms, he was told we had requested a smoking room, which was untrue. The woman at front desk was unprepared to do anything to rectify the hotel's mistake other than to offer to have some air fresheners sent to the room. We were extremely unimpressed by the quality of service we encountered. Further, there was damp on the wall behind our bed, the view was of ugly air conditioning units and the bathroom was so small that you couldn't stand up to use the toilet. The high price we paid to stay here does not represent value for money as far as we are concerned and we would choose to stay at an alternative hotel in Amsterdam in future.

  • Liked — That we were only staying for one night
  • Disliked — Smoking room with damp walls

I stayed at the hotel during my first trip to Amsterdam. I was greated warmly and checked in with ease. As a SPG I was updated to a wonderful room at the end of the hallway. ALthough it wasn't a huge room by any means it was big enough for me. I did have some troubles with the in room internet connection but these were fixed by the second day. The bathroom was well appointed although the only disappointment was that the tub stopper didn't work so my luxurious soak was cut short. The hotel area is wonderful -you should definitely check out the Anne Frank house. I took a nice stroll one evening and enjoyed the canal views.

I found the staff friendly for the most part and would definitely stay here again.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel at the start and finish of a cycling holiday and were delighted with our room. I had stayed at this hotel previously and knew that the location was perfect for us.

On checking in we were offered the opportunity to upgrade to a room overlooking the canal which we accepted. This turned out to be very entertaining as the Gay Pride parade was about to start with a flotilla of decorated barges passing the window.

We took lunch at the hotel as we were tired from travelling and found the service to be very poor for this standard of hotel. After being ignored for ten minutes and seeing the waiting staff attend to people who arrived after us, I had to raise the point with the manager. The food was good but the service level never rose above average. This and previous experiences show that there are far better places to eat only a short distance away. For a treat, the french restaurant Christophe will delight people who love food. This was recommended by the concierge and did not disappoint. For breakfast there are numerous small cafes where you can sit outside and watch the city awake, much better than the hotel provides.

The room was spacious (room 217 - request it early!) and the decoration and fittings were of excellent quality, with a good bathroom. Other rooms I have stayed in here have not been so big, but have still had a quality feel.

As a base this hotel is ideal, and we will certainly use it again. Avoid eating in the hotel or taking expensive hotel organised trips. Walk everywhere or use the excellent tram network to get the most out of your stay.

The cycling part of our holiday was outstanding and we used the highly rated barge 'Elodie' (Google it) which gave us a fabulous flavour of the dutch countryside and towns. This is the only independently owned and operated barge for this type of holiday and the quality of bikes, food and service means that we will be booking a trip next year. Well done Michel!

  • Liked — The quality and location of room
