We have just returned from a 3 night stay at The Pulitzer. After reading previous reviews I was a little dubious to say the least. What a lovely suprise!! I cannot fault the rooms, staff, location etc. in any way whatsover.

Room service was very efficient, the mini bar was very reasonalby priced.

Rooms, bed linen and towels were cleaned everyday.

There was an excellent variety of foods for breakfast, we didn't dine at The Pulitzer of an evening but it all looked very nice.

The Pulitzer bar is very relaxed and friendly and is the perfect way to unwind from your evening.

I would definately recommened this hotel.

I love the Pulitzer and everytime I can get a good deal for it, I stay here when I travel to Amsterdam. It is a nice get-away from the tourists who come to Amsterdam only to indulge in the green, as they cannot afford it.

Everytime, we get different rooms with different arrangements. This past time we were traveling with older relatives, and they were more than willing to accomodate their inability to deal with stairs, and gave them a room right near the elevators and recognizing that we were return guests, gave them a wonderful canal-view room... certainly made their trip a little more romantic. We "kids" did not get such a lovely room, but we still enjoyed it.

The property provides a lovely place to meet with guests - we have family in the Netherlands. It is well located just a few steps from a tramline, a short walk to central areas, and some of our favorite restaurants. All the times that we have been there, we have yet to try the in-house restaurant. We do, however, love the cookies that you get in your room upon check-in. It is a race to the room to try to steal the other person's cookie each time, although the tolerant atmosphere of Amsterdam usually makes the winning party relent and share.

As I mentioned before, it is nice to not smell the aroma of weed in the hotel, although some guests will go and enjoy the nightlife of Amsterdam and sleepily wander back to their rooms, but there have never been any problems with unruly, bothersome guests.

This past time, we drove to Amsterdam, and parked our car with the hotel garage. We did not realize though, even though it is printed on the ticket, that it could take an hour to get the car! Eeek! Put a little delay in our return home, but just wanted to put it out there for those who really love sticking to a schedule.

  • Liked — Feels like home in Amsterdam.
  • Disliked — the stairs... it is a part of the design, but can be tiresome for those who have reduced mobility.
  • Tips/Secrets: — If you have mobility problems, let them know to give you a room near the elevators... no problems then.

Having now been back to Amsterdam about 6 times in as many years, and tried others (the Krasnapolsky customer service was just dreadful, although the rooms and location were great), I find myself drawn back to the Pulitzer every time now. And I think I've now discovered the reason for the variety of reviews... There is a *huge* variety in the rooms in this hotel - even those of supposedly the same class.

There have always been the two of us visiting and we've always asked for a double room. So it's been quite surprising to find that we were once offered a split-level room with two twin-beds "upstairs"; we've had a suite which was a good size but rather strangely had a sink and electric hob in the hallyway of the room (can't see many people who can afford to stay there cooking up an economy breakfast - but there you go - especially when little amuses bouches are brought round mid afternoon); the garret room had literally no space (one shelf in the wardrobe) and was very dark; the room on the ground floor had wonderful exposed brick work and a newly decorated bathroom with a heated floor. That worked very well. So a lot of it is, unfortunately, down to luck of the draw.

I would recommend this hotel strongly though. The staff are almost all helpful and polite (not used the concierge but did notice the golden keys on his jacket), and the breakfasts are very good. Not eaten there in the evening, but the bar does very good cocktails in convivial surroundings and has a fine cognac selection too. The hotel's location is roughly central - and if it seems that 10 minute extra walk from Dam square is a bit far in the evening - you'll welcome the peace and quiet when you arrive back. There's definitely a good "feel" about the hotel.

The hotel seemed to go through an economy drive during 2005 (removing things like the complimentary slippers and the welcome cookies, and not refilling the breakfast containers... Cold dregs of scrambled egg anyone?), but someone seems to have come back and got things back in order. No longer will the traveller have to experience this.

The hotel's not cheap - but that's fairly typical for Amsterdam - and I agree its grip on a 5* rating is up for questions (it's a fine 4* hotel though) - but (like Amsterdam itself), I think everyone should experience it for themselves and not necessarily rely on what others have told them. I suspect you'll enjoy it.

  • Liked — Its quirky co-location of many buildings over the years
  • Disliked — The sheer variety in rooms (and, consequently, their quality)
  • Tips/Secrets: — Don't be afraid to email the hotel and ask for a specific room, or at least a room type

My husband and I live in Europe (although we are American), & travel a great deal. So when our daughter & husband were joining us for holiday, we certainly wanted a COOL, clean & spiffy place for two nights. We usually only do Amsterdam in day trips, but a co-worker of my husband's recommended this hotel. After reading the June Trip Advisor reviews (several) in which very unhappy guests were beseiged by rats, my daughter & I approaced our rooms with caution! What a surprise, though. We were in an inner room, very updated, neat, clean excellent lighting (a problem in Europe), and the best selection of high-end creams & lotions in the bathroom I had seen in a long time. We were delighted that the A/C was working perfectly, since this was during the "great heat wave of '06", & our home had intererior temps of over 100. The bed was comfy, the bedding soft, the bottle of water FREE! , and even though we put our feet down very carefully in the middle of the night --- NO rats. The desk was helpful in arranging a boat tour & museum tickets for us. Since we enjoyed our stay so much, we are returning in 2 weeks with some American friends of ours. Even though we did not eat the hotel food, breakfasts of great coffee & everything else are in little shops all around the hotel for about 1/4 the price, and a lot more atmosphere.

My new wife and I just stayed there for our honeymoon, and we were impressed. The service, and rooms were excellent.

The location is just great, and they have a wonderful breakfast. There are also many other restaurants in walking distance.

The only thing I would not do is make a phone call or use their internet service. If you leave the hotel make a right, and then a right, and you will see a phone internet cafe that is 1/5 of the pulitzer's prices.

Lastly, if you have a car that is taking you to the airport, make sure it is your designated driver, and not someone who the bellboy or conceriage has sent you, so they can get a big tip from the driver
