We choose this hotel because it had more of an "Amsterdam feeling" than others, being 2 canal houses connected together. It was a nice location, but our room was a bit loud (#160), because it was next to the service stairway, bar, and gym.
We asked about upgrading to a canel view, but they didn't really encourage it (very odd to not want to get more money out of you!) saying you only sleep in the room anyway and can see the canals anytime you go outside (which was true). Also, I think the canal view rooms may have had lots of traffic noise as well.
While the hotel was fine for location and service, it was pretty old & dated. Our bath was obviously recently rennovated, which was great -- the shower was one of the BEST!! However, the bathroom was very tiny (one person at a time, please), and the location of the toilet was such that you had to sit sideways! lol They had robes in the room, which was a nice touch.
Our maid service & turn down service was well done, but we were woken up early a couple of times (before 8am), so be sure to put out the "Do not disturb" sign until you leave for the day. They left yummy chocolate too!
The hotel was a maze of hallways, but it was enhanced with a small art gallery and pretty gardens (though it was too cool to want to go out to enjoy the gardens).
The bar was nice, with pleasant staff and comfy chairs.
The bicycle rental place was very good (only a couple of blocks away, and decent/newer bikes with good locks). We had no issues at all and enjoyed seeing the city like the locals.
There is also a wonderful laundry place a couple of blocks from the hotel where we were able to dump off a bunch of cothes and pick them up clean & folded a few hours later -- no time wasted doing our own laundry -- priceless!! :-)
