We found a (relatively) great rate for the Pulitzer on Sheraton's website. The Prinsengracht property boasts a prime location for those who want a taste of romantic Amsterdam and is in easy walking distance of all museums and attractions. This is really where you want to stay in Amsterdam -- away from the Dam Square's touristy hubub and in the midst of residential high-life. Our room in the gable of a canal house was perfectly charming. The heated marble bathroom floor was truly luxurious. Try to get a room with a a canal view.

I've stayed at the Pulitzer 3 - 4 times now in the last 6 months, and it's been a wonderful experience each time. The only reason I don't rate it as excellent is that the size of the rooms is extremely variable, with some boasting romantic views of the canal, and others pokey views of back walls. That said, every room has character, and has been spotlessly clean and well appointed. By Dutch standards, the service is very friendly and helpful, and the hotel remains an oasis in a desert of mediocre, standardised business hotels. If you're visiting Amsterdam as a (romantic) tourist, try to get a canal facing room - unless you like to sleep with the window open...

I had some reservations about booking with the Pulitzer after reading the mixed reviews but was talked into it by my travel agent who books high end travel. I must say it is in a good location and one of the nicer hotels in Amsterdam. The bathrooms are small but like every one else said are nicely done and meet all the needs. Both the rooms I stayed in were well appointed and fine for a nice holiday room. However, we did have several issues. We were woken up by a mouse scratching at the door trying to get out of our room. Needless to say we were immediately moved to an upgraded room with a view of the canals only to find out the mini bar was broken and never able to be fixed during our stay. Also the mini bar is electronic and make mistakes at the slightest jiggle The buffet breakfast was included with our package but would have been 25 euro each if not included- which is way too high.
It is one of the nicest hotels for Amsterdam but I can see where it gets spotty reviews. If you catch them right your in a 4 star hotel - if not -your going to get pot luck on some services. The hard part is that is a far better hotel than most amsterdam hotels so..... the question is what are your compromises.

My husband and i stayed at The Pulitzer for two nights. We arrived on 29th April 2005, Queens Day which is a National Holiday in Holland. We arrived ay 9 a.m the reception staff were very helpful, they gave us a room straight away where we were able to leave our luggage. I must say that the room was very small like a shoe box.
The two following mornings when we went for breakfast we were extremely dissappointed, we waited 20 minutes to be seated, there was no hot food at all, we had to wait approx 25 minutes for the food to arrive. I must say they are very short staff.
I can't say that this is a five star hotel. I have stayed at better hotels in the past.

We choose this hotel because it had more of an "Amsterdam feeling" than others, being 2 canal houses connected together. It was a nice location, but our room was a bit loud (#160), because it was next to the service stairway, bar, and gym.

We asked about upgrading to a canel view, but they didn't really encourage it (very odd to not want to get more money out of you!) saying you only sleep in the room anyway and can see the canals anytime you go outside (which was true). Also, I think the canal view rooms may have had lots of traffic noise as well.

While the hotel was fine for location and service, it was pretty old & dated. Our bath was obviously recently rennovated, which was great -- the shower was one of the BEST!! However, the bathroom was very tiny (one person at a time, please), and the location of the toilet was such that you had to sit sideways! lol They had robes in the room, which was a nice touch.

Our maid service & turn down service was well done, but we were woken up early a couple of times (before 8am), so be sure to put out the "Do not disturb" sign until you leave for the day. They left yummy chocolate too!

The hotel was a maze of hallways, but it was enhanced with a small art gallery and pretty gardens (though it was too cool to want to go out to enjoy the gardens).

The bar was nice, with pleasant staff and comfy chairs.

The bicycle rental place was very good (only a couple of blocks away, and decent/newer bikes with good locks). We had no issues at all and enjoyed seeing the city like the locals.

There is also a wonderful laundry place a couple of blocks from the hotel where we were able to dump off a bunch of cothes and pick them up clean & folded a few hours later -- no time wasted doing our own laundry -- priceless!! :-)
