We stayed at the Hotel Pulitzer pre- and post-cruise, for a total of 5 nights.
For our pre-cruise stay we arrive late evening and were given a small room on the first floor with a queen bed. The room was ok but I don't like rooms on the ground floor. This room though had access to a beautiful outdoor garden which was nice. Since the queen bed was too small and we had trouble sleeping because of it, we were given a room on the fifth floor with 2 twin beds. Even though the room we were given did not have any kind of view, we really liked this room. Being on the fifth floor, there were very high, pitched ceilings. The rooms were quite plain, nothing lavish at all, with wood floors and basic furniture,. The bathroom was small, but very nice. There was only 1 sink and a tub/shower combination. It looks like all the bathrooms have been updated fairly recently with marble floors and counter.
For our post-cruise stay, we were allowed to check in early, about 10:00 am. We only had to wait a few minutes for the room to be ready. The room was on the fifth floor again, right next to the room we had previously, but with a king bed. The room did seem a little bit smaller, but the entire structure of the hotel is a row of canal houses and this room was in a different canal house. The bathroom was virtually identical and the room also had the pitched ceilings.
Depending on your room, you may have to walk down or up a few stairs. What really impressed us about the hotel was the bed and pillows!! It was probably the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in!! Nice and cushy and soft. Wonderful!!
We really liked this hotel. It was well located in the canal district. Just a short walk to Dam Square and the Red Light District. It was also very close to the Anne Frank House and the tram on Westermarkt. A little farther to the museum area, but certainly walkable.
Also, the staff at the hotel were very friendly and accommodating. No problem with the room exchange the first part of the trip. Doormen were always helpful and offered umbrellas when it was raining.
When returning to Amsterdam, we will definitely choose Hotel Pulitzer again.
