“Great classic hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2014

Just completed a two night stay at Hotel Pulitzer. It is exactly what you would expect of a traditional European luxury hotel, but without the attitude. The staff was extremely helpful and exceptionally nice. The location is on a canal and a short walk to Dam Square and the shopping area. The only reason I did not give it a 5 rating is that the rooms are on the small side, at least the one that we were given and we were told that the room we had (room 360) was typical of the size of the rooms. That being said the room was very quite and we had a view of the courtyard and when the shades were drawn it was quite dark.

My visit to Amsterdam was short - arrived at noon one day and left at 2:30pm the following day - so hotel location was a high priority and I must say, the Hotel Pulitzer delivered on that. Right on the Prinsengracht canal, where many boat tours stop, a block away from the Anne Frank Huis, and 10 minutes' walk from Jordaan and the Red Light District. The rooms are all a little different but wonderfully decorated and clean. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. A little pricey but I would absolutely stay here again if I return to Amsterdam.

Have you ever been to a hotel with a great foyer with marble floors and a polite doorman, beckoning you with a beaming smile toward the shiny polished lifts, only to get out on an upper floor and 'Wham!' - you've just travel through time back to 1979 - the hallways and rooms make you think that you've been transported to a late 70's airport hotel.
Worn everything, many years past commercial use-by dates; the kind of lumpy wallpaper you'd see in a bedsit in a 1960's TV show; mattresses with soft spots that sink half way to the floor and require a visit to the chiropractor to recover from.
I travelled with a number of colleagues, and saw the inside of four rooms, including the "luxury loft canal suite" (probably the worst room of the lot) and ranging from a top suite to a basic room, and every room was easily a couple of decades past their used-by date.
The Pulitzer isn't a truly shocking, dirty hotel - the staff were very helpful and friendly, but it's clear that the 'Luxury Collection' status was bestowed some decades back, but it's clear that it is simply no longer a luxury nor 5 star hotel. It's a 3 to 4 star basic hotel.
I travel to Amsterdam regularly for business, and have stayed at most hotels around the city at one time or another. This 4-night stay was probably the worst experience I've had to date. Other 4 star hotels offer much better rooms, food, and experience - the hilton or the doubletree (45% cheaper) are much better hotels.
My 'one-star / terrible' rating is a reflection of the clear case of 'false advertising' - this is a hotel that misrepresents itself, and absolutely isn't either 5-star or 'luxury, but absolutely charges like it is. If the Pulitzer represented itself as 4-star and lowered it's prices by 40%, i'd likely give it a '4-star / very good' review.
Other factors that let this hotel down are food and internet. The food is simply terrible. I had room service a number of times, and the food is bad-cafe standard. The 'luxury angus burger' was a bowel-cramping horror that was formed from a clearly de-frosted rock-hard pattie that I assume was grown in a lab from stem cells. The Netherlands is rated in the top-10 countries in the world for average broadband internet speeds (#6 in 2014 - USA is #11), and every other hotel I've stayed in in Amsterdam offers free internet with >10MBPs+ speed. The Pulitzer charges €20 per day for poor quality wifi - even if you're in a €1,500+ per night suite!! All this and worn out 1970's rooms for some of the most expensive rooms in Amsterdam.
In short, if you're after a 5-star / luxury-type hotel in Amsterdam, stay at The Grand (Sofitel) - it's clearly the best hotel in Amsterdam and it's exactly the same price (and their room service, same prices, come from a michelin-starred kitchen). If you're after a good quality hotel with nice clean modern rooms, good food, free fast wifi, then stay at the DoubleTree near the Centraal train station.
Starwood management - this hotel damages your brand. Either drop the prices and the 'Luxury Collection' status and transfer the hotel to your Sheraton brand, or close the hotel and thoroughly refurbish it. Either way, sack the chef or review his produce and kitchen headcount budget.

Avoid this hotel.

Room Tip: For the best rooms, telephone a different hotel. If you're after a 5-star / luxury-type hotel i...

We spent two nights at the Hotel Pulitzer, and loved every minute. The beds were so comfy and the room was more than ample
We had a view of the canal which was right outside the door. The concierge's were extremely helpful in directing us for our stay in Amsterdam. We took a walking tour with the concierge from the hotel and enjoyed the overview. We also went for a ride on the Tourist, a lovely old canal boat. We were directed to a great fish restaurant, Lucian's.

Spent two nights at the Hotel Pulitzer and loved the entire experience. The location is perfect, close to all the sights and since Amsterdam is a walking city, the Pulitzer was a prime starting point. We also loved the history and ambiance of the hotel and enjoyed walking through all the hallways and strolling the gardens. The room was spacious and the bathroom nice updated, but still had a nice period feel.

Check-in was easy, service at the bar was lovely and the concierge both nights recommended fantastic places to eat based on our criteria.

I agree with others that this is a top location. You are right on the Prinsengracht canal and close to the Anne Frank House and some great shopping and dining. We were a little disappointed that even as late as 4:00 PM our room was not ready, but they gave us a free drink in the courtyard while we waited. The room faced the interior courtyard and had a small bed, not sure if it was actually queen sized or full sized, but definitely smaller than anything else we had in other cities on this trip. The bathroom is really tight for two adults trying to get ready. No place to store your make up bag, counter space is non existent around the sink and the tub is super narrow.

The restaurant was not our favorite, but due to King's Day, we were pretty much confined to the hotel for dinner. The waiter seemed to rush us, asking several times to take our order before we had finished scanning the menu. Food was good, not great.

The printer was out of order so we couldn't print our boarding passes. Another glitch was asking for a 6:45 am wake up call and getting two calls the next morning, first at 5:45, then at 6:00 am. One thing we did appreciate was the air conditioning. It was one of the few places we stayed that let you adjust it to a really chilly setting, which is what we like.

If you want to find a hotel right in the center of the action for King's Day....this is your place. They had their own DJ out front and drinks and food on the canal, which was kind of fun. We were sorry that we didn't get a chance to take a ride in their 1909 river launch, but understandably they put her in storage for King's Day.

There are some good things about the Pulitzer. The location is terrific. The property is very interesting, combining over twenty canal houses into one hotel. The public spaces are well designed and the interior garden is lovely. The concierge team is very helpful. The food and drink operation is good. Their canal boat is wonderful. Unfortunately there it ends. This is a five star hotel that has doormen that don't greet their guests. Bellmen that dump your luggage in the middle of your room and leave. A front desk full of people that are not service oriented, they are ungracious. Either management has a vision that has not been communicated to the operations staff or they are simply poorly trained. I do not have to stay in a five star hotel, but when I do there are expectations. Unfortunately this hotel disappoints.I should also mention that although we had an upgraded room with a canal view, the room itself was not attractive, nor comfortable , and the bathroom was very poorly designed.
