“Great location, unique courtyard and so-so service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

The Pulitzer is a very unique property - it is comprised of more than 20 connected canal houses taking up most of a full city block. It is unassuming on the outside and has a large interior courtyard that includes a restaurant terrace and a place you can simply relax.

We were staying at the hotel on an employee rate so we did not get one of the best rooms. Room 112 is located about eight feet from the lobby and across from the luggage storage room. While this may sound like hell it turned out okay. We could not hear any noise coming out of the lobby and rarely heard staff going into the luggage room. A thick, sturdy door no doubt helped block out the sound. We also had a sliding door that opened out into a private courtyard that was shared by only four or five other rooms - a nice, tranquil place to hang out. The added bonus is the free WiFi signal from the lobby was accessible from our room. All in all we were generally happy with the room.

I didn't appreciate having to pay 45 Euros for a roll-away bed (an extortionate price!) and found the service significantly lacking in the dining room at breakfast time.

Dear John B,

Thank you very much for your comments about Hotel Pulitzer, I am happy to read that you have enjoyed your stay at our indigenous hotel. It is great to read that you enjoyed the courtyard terrace belonging to your room, the inner gardens of Hotel Pulitzer are one of the oldest of Amsterdam. Furthermore, I would like to thank you for your honest feedback about the service in our restaurant during breakfast, I have passed on your comments to the team to avoid repetition of what you describe in the future. I hope we may have the pleasure of welcoming you back to Hotel Pulitzer.

With warm regards,

Alex van Gastel

It's a nice hotel but boy! you can get lost in it!! This hotel appears to consist of a few adjacent buildings connected by covered glass passages which look nice, but that creates a labyrinth which is fun to navigate :)) The place has a feel of a boutique hotel with all the features of a big one. The location is fairly central with easy access to public transportation. Our room was very nice. The breakfast was excellent, with great variety of stuff and omelette made to order. The service included a visit by the maid offering to prepare your bed at night and shut the curtains, with a small complimentary box of chocolates. The staff were so nice that charged the taxicab fare to our bill when we ran out of cash instead of exchanging our dollars at their high rate.

Dear Ron S,

Thank you very much for your wonderful comments about Hotel Pulitzer. I am delighted to read that you had a memorable experience at our hotel. As you mention, Hotel Pulitzer consists out of 25 canal houses, built in the 17th century. The houses are located at both Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht and are all connected, which can make it a challenge to find your way. All our Ambassadors however, are more than happy to guide you through the hotel and tell you one of the many stories about the several houses. We hope to welcome you back to Hotel Pulitzer in the near future!

With warm regards,

Alex van Gastel

I came here with my partner and his parents who were on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. The friendly front staff member told my partner we would be given an upgrade for one room. When we told her that the upgrade would be for his parents due to their anniversary weekend, she pleasantly surprised us all by arranging a bottle of champagne and a congratulatory card to be sent to their room later that day. What a lovely gesture, I only wish I could remember her name to mention here!

Nevertheless, the rooms were beautifully decorated and the beds are super comfy. Being in Europe, I missed not having kettle in the room to make tea and coffee, but you can request for one to be brought to your room.

The bathrooms are a little small, but actually pretty standard for Europe. Everything was spotlessly clean and tidy. Two bottles of complimentary water are provided a day.

We took a trip on the canal in the hotel's boat with a wonderful and very informative guide. As others have said, it is just a block away from the Anne Frank museum. Being so close by, we went there just before the official opening time to avoid the very long queues. We also went to the Van Gogh museum which was teaming with people, but worthwhile.

The gym is well equipped with towels and water. It is a bit of a trek from the rooms, but a relaxing one through the hotel corridors past the beautifully garden courtyard and small gallery.

The bar area is also beautiful, but unfortunately we didn't have time to take a drink there as we were so busy during our 3 night stay. Again, the same goes for the restaurant.

Talking of restaurants, there are some really good eateries and cafes within walking distance to the hotel. The concierge are very helpful with recommendations and bookings.

We all loved our stay here, were sad to leave and we would highly recommend this place for those who want convenience, comfort and great service.

My partner and I stayed in this hotel for one night in July/2013. The hotel is in a great, high-end part of town with nice cafes, shops and restaurants a stone’s throw away. It is also key that the hotel clientele is not a tourist crowd. They were high-end business professionals and families – quiet, discrete and clearly well-traveled. The hotel breakfast was good quality and fairly expansive. We cashed in on the SPG suite upgrades and got a great 90 m2 room. Also, although we had to wait for the previous room occupants to leave (they had late check-out privileges), the concierge/front desk treated us very well. Additionally, there is a large courtyard for meals and the lunch/dinner options were great. The only drawback was a spotty wifi connection.

Room Tip: For SPG Guests: Definitely worth it to cash in your suite upgrades. The suite we received was enormo...

Stayed three nights in Pulitzer and did not once have the chance to dine in the (beautiful) courtyard ,although it did not rain, whats more the weather was more than pleasant, it was perfect in all the three nights we stayed therel. All other terraces were open in Amsterdam... The courtyard(dining) was the most important selection criteria when choosing Pultzer. There are not too many in Amsterdam...When I asked the concierge about the reason he politely referred to a weather report of undisclosed source, completely ignoring the fact that the weather was oviously nice with cloudless skies.
Otherwise the hotel is average in its category, except the location wich is excellent.

This is a great hotel made up of many houses put together. The rooms, service and restaurant were outstanding. The location is perfect. A truly unique property with great history. The private boat tour owned and operated by the hotel is worth it.

Room Tip: The canal view rooms are romantic.

Great hotel in a very good location in Amsterdam. In walking distance of all major attractions. Anne Frank Museum is just 1 block away. Our room was a 2 story suit with a master bedroom down stairs & a double bed room up stairs. Very friendly staff & management. The walking tour is a must also. The tour guide was excellent. Breakfast was very good also.
