We checked into the Pulitzer early in the day and I do agree with a previous post that the front line staff come off a little brisk and irritated ( with Americans...I don't know but I did not feel welcomed). We didn't get our room despite informing them we were coming in an hour or two earlier.

That being said, I have to say that the Prinsengracht location, the unique canal house feel to the place and the other staff made this such a wonderful stay.

The a/c was a little warm-ish but that was because we had a large canal room with a really high ceiling and it we had a few hot days. Coming from Frankfurt though, this was still a big improvement. The weather cooled a little towards the end of our week and it was perfect.

A friend had dropped off season tkts to the museums and the front desk lost them. Lisa, the supervisor came through with shining colors. She was efficient and found them. In the meantime, she provided us with museum tkts and did everything to make us very happy.

The breakfast buffet was fabulous and the staff was so friendly and helpful. We spent almost a week but by day 3 they recognised us already.

The housecleaning staff is excellent. They were kind, helpful, prompt and efficient. We got our fill of the complimentary delicious stroop wafels and water they put in the room everyday.

The safe and great location could not be beat. It was nice to stay somewhere where we could walk to lovely shops, wonderful restuarants (Long Pura and Moeder's can't be beat!), nice sights, the canal boats, etc..There is even a dry cleaners round the corner from the hotel too. We never tired of walking. There was always something worth seeing over the bridge or around the corner. The location is very central and is only 10 mins by cab to the train station, 20 mins to Arlanda Airport.

Despite a few hiccups, I'd definitely stay here again, would recommend it to friends and the Trip Advisor community.

The Hotel Pulitzer is extremely well located in central Amsterdam. All the sights may be reached on foot or an easy trolley ride away. Robert, the Concierge, was extremely helpful. He made great recommendations for dinner and for sightseeing. Definitely ask for Robert! The room was quite charming (although small and cozy). The breakfast buffet was ample and delicious.

Robert recommended what turned out to be our favorite restaurant -- Blomgracht (opposite the Anne Frank house). It was one of the best meals we had in Europe. Very fresh ingredients, right size portions, good use of herbs, great wine selection, fair prices, smart casual atmosphere. Robert also recommended an excursion to Zansee Shans – a little windmill village a train ride out of town. It was a great outing. We did not go to the Keukenhof because it was at the end of the season and we were very happy not to have done so. Others who went were very, very disappointed. We were turned off by the politizing commentary at the Anne Frank house -- comparing the U.S. Patriot Act to Nazi Germany. So if that sort of thing turns you off, save the Euros and don't waste time waiting in line.

We would return to the Pulitzer. It is a lovely hotel made more lovely by the accommodating staff. Happy trails!

So, we used starwood points, otherwise we would never have been able to afford to stay at the Pulitzer. The front line staff exhibit a disdain for American tourists. The cleaning and restaurant staff though are excellent.
I would not have paid money to stay here. Plus, I don't think I could afford the rates. The airconditioning did not work and when we called the front desk at 2am, we were told that many rooms' air con were not working. We could not change rooms until the following day.
The concierge and the valet all seemed to give us wrong information at some point. They were lazy and did not want to check and validate their information.
The business center internet is free. So, they don't completely nickel and dime you.
The breakfast is amazing, I seriously can't get over how amazing it is. I have never seen something so tasteful. They really know how to do that right.
The rooms were blah. The decorating was bland. At least the art work wasn't tacky prints. The beds were comfortable.
The "art" in the gallery near the lobby was tacky.
No pool, spa or anything of the like.

  • Liked — breakfast buffet
  • Disliked — their general disdain for americans, lack of competency, poor airconditioning, adequate

By no means this is a five starr hotel, although the price says it is. Not in service, not it ammenities or facility.
The bed was comfortable, there is a bose wave radio in the room, but other than that, nothing else was out of the ordinary.
Be prepared to pay extra for anything else. THere is wirless internet in the room, but pay extra 20 euros a day or 5 euros for an hour. There is room service, but you have to pay extra for it. Briging ice to the room is considered room service if you want to buy anything from the minibar.
The location is very nice though. Away from the noise and very safe and clean area of the city and at a walking distance to all the important sites.

We stayed at the Pulitzer some time ago (August of 2007) so some memories are lost. This will be short:

1) The Staff: Did a good job, answered questions as they should have, but did not got out of their way to be helpful. I'd give them 3 points out of 5

2) The location: Very good; convenient and upscale neighborhood. We had a friend that stayed in a neighborhood closer to the red light district, and let me say...we spent a lot more time in our neighborhood. Lots to see in walking distance. Give the location a 5.

3) The Food: Great buffet breakfast can not be missed. we didn't have any other meals there, but the breakfast was top notch for a buffet. Give the food a 4.5.

4) Amenities/little touches: interesting layout, a bit of a maze, but that made it quieter and more intimate. We arrived to our room with a gift of a bottle local liquor...a whiskey, and it was very tasty. Free waters in the rooms. They have their own canal boat for tours and private use which is nice but pricey. Amenities and attention to detail, 4.5

5) The Room: Room is small, but that is the norm for Amsterdam apparently (when our friend came over he said his room was "pretty much the size of our bathroom...no, seriously!"). We were on the first floor on the canal, but was a bit noisy from road noise and some construction work being done. In fact, there was this big green work trailer parked in front of the canal by our window that turned us off a bit. Give the room a 3.

All in all, a good place to stay, but maybe a little too much to pay for what it is.
