“Beautiful Property in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

The service at the hotel is brilliant. The property is spotless with an excellent espresso bar and bar/lounge. The workout room is more than adequate. The rooms are absolutely charming, it feels more like a B and B with excellent bathrooms with heated floors. My room had a nice view of the canal and a very solid, yet soft bed. The location is perfect close to dam square but away from bustle of the center of town. nice shops located nearby with everything from exclusive Amsterdam based designers to funky toy shops.

After enjoying a short but wonderful stay at the Pulitzer Hotel a few years back, it was my first choice for my recent trip to Amsterdam. The hotel was even better than I remembered!

Check-in was flawless. The woman assisting us was friendly, welcoming and professional. My husband's SPG Platinum status was recognized and honored (I was traveling without him on this trip). My friend and myself were upgraded to a spacious junior suite. After looking at the room, we asked if we could be changed to a smaller room with a canal view. Our Porter helped confer our request with the front desk, which readily accommodated us. We were given a beautifully furnished room with large picture windows overlooking the canal. Beautiful! I highly recommend a canal view room (over a larger one) if available.

Very impressed with all staff we encountered - from the knowledgeable concierge staff, the helpful espresso barista who helped us choose the perfect blend, the the wait staff in the restaurant, to those manning the front door (each time we left and re-entered the hotel, we were greeted and welcomed with a warm hello and goodbye) - impeccable and friendly service!

Worthy of noting:
*The location is amazing. Walking distance to all sights within Amsterdam. Just a few blocks stroll from the Anne Frank house. The area around the hotel is charming and fun to explore.
*Buffet breakfast (complimentary for Platinum members) was wonderful. Well worth paying for if not included We loved the gentleman in charge of the breakfast! The chef and his creative (and beautiful) omelettes was a highlight!
*Beds are extremely comfortable, very important for a good night's sleep when traveling abroad.

Not only can I not wait to return to the Hotel Pulitzer, we are planning when we can!

Room Tip: Canal view - definitely worth it!

Wonderful hotel in a great location-overlooking the Prinzergracht canal. Service requests are honored within minutes. Very clean and quiet. Nespresso machine provided upon request.
The bathroom dryer is useless - need to hold a button down continuously to use it - but a portable hair dryer was provided upon request.
Wi-fi in the room is NOT free - however, it is free in the hotel lobby, or at the 2 complimentary laptops located in the lobby.
Had breakfast there most of the time, and it is great - Lambert is very friendly and helpful, Ann is very attentive, so you feel like you visit family!

Room Tip: Definitely overlooking the canal - the view is priceless.

Dear Pia R,

Thank you very much for your ratings and review on TripAdvisor. It is a pleasure reading you enjoyed the Canal View of the Prinsengracht. The Prinsengracht is indeed a beautiful canal, with a lot of excitement going on. Furthermore I am grateful that you requested another hairdryer and Nespresso machine, to make your stay with us more comfortable.
On behalf of the entire team of Hotel Pulitzer, I hope we may welcome you again in the near future.

With warm regards,

If you like to be in the city center but want to avoid the usual place you can go in this boutique hotel.
Small number of rooms, old style, warm, with highly professional staff who can accomodate all your needs
And price is good as well...

Dear Claudia G,

Thank you very much for sharing your Hotel Pulitzer experience with us on TripAdvisor. Indeed, Hotel Pulitzer is an historical property, as it consists of 25 authentic Canal Houses, dating back from the 17th and 18th century. All houses are internally linked, so all rooms are unique in size and shape. Should your travels take you to Amsterdam, I hope we may welcome you again.

With warm regards,

Alex van Gastel

A beautiful hotel on Prinsengracht, which is situated in a collection of canal houses. The narrow, steep staircases, the views of the canal from the large windows in the rooms and the great courtyard provide an authentic Dutch hotel experience. The staff was very friendly. The recently refurbished gym is well equipped. The buffet breakfast looking out onto the Nine Bridges area of town is very good, with a wide selection of local and international foods.

The most authentic hotel experience that I have encountered in Amsterdam after having stayed in the Amstel, the Marriott, the NH, and the Sheraton.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking a canal.

I will caveat that my experience is clouded by being a) Lifetime Platinum with Starwood, b) being a very frequent business traveller so I am used to asking for what I want, and c) a multiple repeat visitor to the Pulitzer, but this hotel is just so special.

The hotel itself, with the frequently cited amalgamation of canal townhouses makes for a very unique experience for someone staying for some time, with every room being different.
The location is fantastic, and if you can overcome basic tourist urges and spend a few minutes understanding the tram system, you can be anywhere in the greater AMS area in 20-30minutes for less than a cup of coffee. I chose to stay here during a conference, for example, which was an easy 20min ride in a pleasant tram each morning.
The Pulitzer is easy walking distance from attractions like the Anne Frank house, the Central Dam Square, and also hip areas of town such as 9streets and the Jordaan, great pubs like Gollem & Beer Temple and progressively more adventurous areas such as the RedLight and some lovely coffeehouses like Abraxas.

The staff is simply amongst the best of any hotel I've ever stayed in. The leadership sets the tone, with the GM (Alex) setting an excellent example for his staff. Everyone here is just lovely, from the people manning the breakfast room, to the waiter in the bar who remembered me from a trip 9mths prior, to the incredibly accommodating front desk team & porters. The Concierge staff, in particular Ron Stoevelaar who was rightfully promoted to Head Concierge last year, is exemplary, and they go far far out of their way to make your trip special.
If you come to Amsterdam and want a 'home' more than a hotel, this is your spot.

I will echo MarkWijman's review that the recent increase of choices of luxe hotels available in Amsterdam should trigger some efforts at face-lifting at the Pulitzer. While it doesn't need to go over-the-top baroque deco like the Des Indes (which I also love), it is due for some changes to keep it competitive in an increasingly crowded marketplace: either a good sprucing up to keep it competitive, and/or an adjustment of its pricing models.

Room Tip: This is a labyrinth of a hotel. If you have mobility issues, make sure to make them known, as each...

I've been in this hotel in may, last year.
Everything was perfect.
The most amazing thing is that you are in a hotel in the center of the city, but the all structure gives you the sensation of been a resident in Amsterdam.
The room was confortable, clean, and the bed was perfect, the best i've ever slept on!

Dear gusto g,

Thank you for your lovely review! The beds indeed are amazing, we get a lot of compliments on them. As you find yourself in actual authentic canal houses, it is easier to feel one with the city and feel like a resident of Amsterdam. I am very happy to read we exceeded your expectations, perfect is always great!
