The north end of the Vondelpark is close to the Riyksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum but the park is quite large and is worth visiting on its own if you have a few days in Amsterdam. We went on a Thursday in July and I was surprised how many people, seemingly all Dutch, were enjoying the park during a working day. Earlier that day someone had told us she enjoyed taking at least part of her holidays at home in Amsterdam and I can imagine this would be a good reason. There are lots of trees and streams with little bridges and places serving food and drinks so you can unwind on your own or amid company.
The easiest access is by tram and there are many different trams that run alongside the Vondelpark. You just need a map that shows the tram numbers and routes. I guess it would be at least an hour's walk south from Central Station but quite accessible by bicycle if you rent one.
