“get there early”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

this museum was closed for renovation on our last Amsterdam visit so we were very happy to be able to visit on our recent trip. We were in line before opening time and had prepurchased the admssion tickets. By getting there early,we were able to go to the Night Watch right away and view without crowds in front of us. The arrangement of the exhibits spreads the visitors across many rooms so that it does not feel as crowded as other museums.
The building is beautiful, as is the stained glass in the great hall outside the Night Watch gallery
The cafe is quite a nice area to take a break and have a coffee and pastry.

“Beautifully presented gallery.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

Although I believe they are still completing work on the Rijksmuseum, hours and hours can be spent strolling through the galleries. There are so many wonderful pieces of art and artefacts to immerse yourself in. The Rembrandt's and the model ship room were definitely the highlights for me.

“Two words: Night Watch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

I didn't make it in time to get on the English guided tour for the time period I wanted - which would have covered Vermeer and Rembrandt, but I picked up the (cheap) audioguide and spent a great couple hours in this real treasure of the Netherlands.

If you love Vermeer you will be disappointed as there are not too many of his works here (but the ones that are, are enjoyable) but the Night Watch is worth the price of admission alone. Grand in size and scope, and virtuosic in technique, it's worth contemplating for a good long while.

It's a comprehensive museum, but not one that leaves you despairing at trying to see it all. Which is always a mark of a great museum experience.

“Allot enough time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

There is a lot to see here so allow yourself time to enjoy without rushing.

The Nightwatch is a must see but unfortunately that is where the heaviest crowds are but there are many less crowded paces in the museum.

We went for a while and then took a break having lunch in the cafe near the Amsterdam sign (can't remember the name - but good) and then went back in. This allowed a break so as not to be overwhelmed.

“Rembrandt's Best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

The Night Watch painting by Rembrandt is spectacular. A must visit. Also, four (4) Vermeer's on display, including the Milkmaid.
