“Such a remarkable renovation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

It took a decade but the architects certainly brought new life and light into the museum. Seeing the Nightwatch in the new setting was certainly an improved experience...you could "see' the Nightwatch. Light!! Just so many treasures. What a delight.

“A treasure trove - but book online to avoid the queues”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

We have been patiently waiting for the Rijksmuseum to reopen for some years and I'm pleased to report that it was worth the wait! The building is beautiful and reminds me a bit of the Natural History Museum in London. The restoration is excellent.

The contents of the museum are even more impressive - we entered mid morning and only just managed to sprint through all the rooms before closing time. It's huge! Allow plenty of time to enjoy everything on offer from Delftware to model ships to weapons and all of the stunning paintings including all of the Rembrandts. I was surprised how much I enjoyed all of the different exhibits and paintings. The large canvasses are particularly impressive.

Given that the museum has only recently reopened, it is extremely popular. We booked our tickets online and were able to skip the giant queue with our printed tickets. Highly recommended so that you can maximize your time exploring.

“Well worth the long wait”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

After 10 years the Rijksmuseum has finally been able to show off its new image and become a major tourist attraction again.

If you book tickets online you can avoid the long queues, since there is a special entrance for e-ticket holders across the road, and if you happen to be a customer of the Dutch ING bank, you pay 7.50 instead of 15 euros. Children aged 18 and under go free.

Paintings, furniture, silver, ceramics, sculptures etc are now displayed by period instead of department, so for every period there is a lot to take in.

Rembrandt's Nightwatch is now on the second floor, as it belongs to the 17th century, Holland's Golden Age. Here you will also find paintings by Frans Hals, Johannes Vermeer and Jan Steen.

Although there is a fairly large cafe on the ground floor, queues can be long, especially on a Sunday, but there are plenty of places to eat in the neighbourhood.

A large shop on the ground floor specialises in Rijksmuseum related articles, but there is also a general Museum Shop in Museum Square (Museumplein) where you can buy articles from other museums as well, such as the Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum.

Tram 5 and 2 will take you there from the Central Station.

“Great museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

The newly renovated Rijksmuseum is easy to navigate, and has an excellent collection of Rembrandt, as well as the other Dutch masters. Especially helpful are the translated sheets you can find in each room which help to explain what you are seeing.
