“Perfect Hotel for a Quiet Honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2011

Quiet, very clean, very comfortable, contemporary, convenient location, fantastic breakfast (great coffee and fresh baked goodies), perfect-sized room, fantastic toiletries, radiant heated bathroom floors (great in the winter) close to great restaurants, wonderful owners (kind and hardworking) ... I could go on and on.

I love the quote that is nicely placed on the wall of the breakfast area, "Love, Be Passionate, Be Spontaneous, Dream Big, Celebrate, Change the World" ... it's very nice touch to the decor and also seems to be a reflection on the type of atmosphere that this hotel creates. This really is the perfect hotel for a quiet, romantic honeymoon or simply a special getaway.

We booked Mauro Mansion on account of its very positive reviews on Trip Advisor and true to those reviews it provides a wonderful mix of location, style and really great service.

It's more of a boutique B&B than a hotel but that shouldn't put you off, there's plenty of places to eat very close by in Amsterdam. It's small enough to have an intimate and individual feel and the design of the rooms gave a sense of being in a stylish setting but retained a certain modesty about it, which I liked.

I think the reason it gets so many five stars (I know I've only given it four but I think one should be sparing with 5s) is the service. The guys that run the place go out of their way to be helpful. Most B&B/Hotel owners are generally helpful people but for these guys it seemed effortless, they had good ideas and as others mentioned had thought of lots of little things (like having enough guide books that they could lend to guests for the day). Simple but makes a difference.

My BF and I stayed at Mauro Mansion for a few nights and we loved every minute of it. The hotel location is perfect for seeing the touristy sites as well as the local neighborhoods. It's difficult to call this hotel a "hotel" as it is more like a B&B. The owners are very friendly and available to help provide guidance tourist locations/directions as well as recommendations on excellent restaurants in the area. We had a street-level room and it turned out to be much better than we expected. The bed is comfortable and the room is spacious and beautifully decorated. We also loved the welcome bottle of Prosecco. The honesty bar is a fantastic idea and it gave us the feeling that we were more like "house guests" than hotel customers. We looked forward to the daily breakfast in the dining area--the food was delicious. If we ever make it back to Amsterdam, we will definitely stay at Mauro Mansion again.

Room Tip: Rooms fill up quickly... be sure to make arrangements as soon as possible.

We just got back from 4 night stay in Amsterdam and we were very glad we chose this hotel. Mauro Mansion is a small (they only have 9 rooms) couple led hotel around the corner from red light district and central station.

Pros:
- Personal service from Mercel & Berry. They are an excellent example of how a good service can push the hotel up another level. Mercel greeted us at the door when we checked in. Although we arrived early we were able to check in. Whilst the room was getting ready, Mercel made us a cup of coffee (from Jura coffee machine!) and asked if we wanted any help with sight seeing. Berry left different treats (chocolate, waffle etc) on the pillow everyday as he cleaned the room. Someone was always at the reception and would welcome us with a smile etc.
- Location is very convenient if you wanted to be near the red light district or the central station. We booked a canal view and were not disappointed with the excellent view. The street was not sleazy or too noisy despite its proximity to the red light district (ok, there was a prostitute's window down the same street but this hardly bothered us or anyone in the hotel).
- Room was spacious and bathroom well appointed with power shower. The decoration was done in an ultra modern fashion and may divide the opinion - we liked it. It also has air con to keep the room cool.
- The fridge was stocked with free goodies as a compliment e.g. beers, juice and even a small bottle of proseco. They weren't restocked (as it was explained) but we were free to use the fridge.
- Wifi worked well and a laptop was provided, again free of charge
- The honesty bar was very reasonably priced (for Amsterdam).
- I wasn't sure about the breakfast at the beginning as it was limited (x3 choices of ham, x2 choice of cheese, 2 types of breads and cereals, orange or apple juice, coffee & tea, fruits) and no hot food or salads. But Mercel made different additional food every day (pancake on the first day, pinapple on another day, apple tart etc) and we were interested to see what next day brings. We also realized we didn't really want a heavy breakfast as the dutch restaurants tended to serve late and we were too full the next day.

Cons:
- Our room's window didn't open (we thought we can see the next room's open)
- Although trams were near by, it was a little inconvenient if majority of the site seeing were in museum, central or western area. Not a huge negative for us as we liked walking through the red light district as we came back to people watch.
- As it was a small place a one unthoughtful family can make the place uncomfortable. We were unfortunate to see a family from non-euopean "english" speaking country occupy 2 tables and a sofa between 3 of them when everyone else were sharing a table between 2 people. They also hogged the communal laptop and we could not get near it at breakfast or evening time.
- The soundproofing was much much better than in british hotel. But on occasion we could hear street noise. We also had a infrequent low buzzing noise coming from inside of the room lasting 1-2 seconds.
- There were mosquitoes in the room but this is unavoidable being next to the canal. Mozzy net is provided so not a huge problem.
- the stairs are very steep and not for anyone with physical disability. I think there were x2 ground floor rooms though.

Overall I would recommend the hotel to anyone that's not easily offended by the near by red light district and not in need of a more quiet sedate canals in less touristy parts of the Amsterdam. It suited us well and would be happy to go back if we go back to Amsterdam!

Mauro Mansion is technically in the Red Light District. But kind of like how Staten Island is technically part of New York City. Sure, it can make this claim, but it's far enough away to not have to deal with everything negative about the district. It is located on a quiant street. Very quiet, away from any crowds.

Our rooms were their very own. Each room was setup differently and had their own charm. The rooms were clean and the caretakers/owners (I can't remember their names now), couldn't be more helpful. The complimentary breakfast in their little kitchen was out of this world. We spent each morning recounting our Amsterdam experiences and planning what we were going to do that day. The two owners were always there and ready to help and serve.

It's no accident this hotel is ranked NUMBER ONE in Amsterdam. It should be! (by the way, it's more of a bed and breakfast than an actual hotel.)

Room Tip: We stayed on the two ground floor rooms. Both were very charming and quiet, despite being on the gro...
