We have found that the best way to experience a city is to take advantage of a bike tour. We chose Joy Ride Tours in Amsterdam and booked the Windmills, Clogs and Cheese tour that takes you outside the city. It was fantastic!
The tour was one of the highlights of our time in Amsterdam (and that is saying a lot because Amsterdam has so much to offer). Our tour guide was Yuri (hope I spelled that correctly) and he was great. Entertaining and funny and with a wealth of historical and cultural information on Amsterdam and the countryside. He also gave us an appreciation for the ability that Amsterdam (a city below sea level) has in redirecting and containing the water that surrounds the city. It was fascinating.
We chose the Windmill, Clog and Cheese tour because we wanted to get out of the city and see some of the countryside and because it was a longer tour. 40% of the people in Amsterdam are on bikes so navigating the streets in the city by bike can be a little stressful. You have to watch where you are going and can't really sight see. Getting out of the city was the way to go. The tour was long but not tedious or tiring. You go at an easy pace and make informational and photo stops along the way. Although some reviewers found the the clog and cheese stop a little commercial, we thought it was great. And just sampling the cheese was worth the stop. Do buy a sample of their Gouda. Delicious!
The bikes themselves are sturdy and very comfortable. Nice big seats! They have roomy saddlebags so you can bring a jacket, camera, etc. and definitely bring food with you. This tour does not stop for snacks or lunch.
