Our group of 10 stayed at the Wyndham Apollo on February 24 - 27, 2012. After reading some of the reviews about our hotel, I was a little concerned about some of the poor ratings the hotel had received. So, I went online and had a very nice chat with the hotel's night manager, Shuhroh. At the suggestions of other reviewers, I asked for a room on the canal side of the hotel, but was told that an upgrade would be additional euros per night. Being on a budget, I declined the offer. Shuhroh told me that our room was on the city side, but would be a nice room. I found that acceptable. To my surprise when we checked in, I was greeted by name by an exceptionally nice staff and found that the manager had noted on the reservation that we should be given a nice room. Expecting to be on the city side when we got to our room, we were very pleasantly surprised to find that we were on the canal side at no additional cost!!
The facility was absolutely wonderful and the staff went out of their way to treat our group with much respect and niceness. There were others in the group who weren't happy with their rooms, but the staff went out of their way to accommodate their wishes and everyone was very pleased with their accommodations!!
The rooms were all very clean and quite satisfactory. The restaurant has a wonderful view of the canals and the food exceptional. Make sure you opt for the bed and breakfast package. It is worth the small additional cost. There was a wide selection of foods at breakfast.
Jack, the bellman and concierge was exceptional. He was very helpful in making restaurant suggestions and arranging taxis for the group. I don't know how he was able to wear both hats, but he did and was great at it!! One evening the front desk staff even called him at home because we couldn't remember some details he had arranged for us! Jack's restaurant suggestions were fantastic, particularly his dinner suggestion at Brasserie Richard which was within a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
The Wyndham Apollo is a great hotel. It is about a 25 minute walk from the center of town, but a taxi ride was no more than 10 euros. Our taxi fare to the airport was 55 euros for six people with luggage. The taxi fare from Central Station to the hotel was 20 euros for four people with luggage. We could have taken a tram to a stop about 5 minutes from the hotel, but with luggage, we decided to take a taxi.
The next time I'm in Amsterdam, I would definitely stay at the Wyndham Apollo!!
