“We found a diamond in Amsterdam!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2012

Our group of 10 stayed at the Wyndham Apollo on February 24 - 27, 2012. After reading some of the reviews about our hotel, I was a little concerned about some of the poor ratings the hotel had received. So, I went online and had a very nice chat with the hotel's night manager, Shuhroh. At the suggestions of other reviewers, I asked for a room on the canal side of the hotel, but was told that an upgrade would be additional euros per night. Being on a budget, I declined the offer. Shuhroh told me that our room was on the city side, but would be a nice room. I found that acceptable. To my surprise when we checked in, I was greeted by name by an exceptionally nice staff and found that the manager had noted on the reservation that we should be given a nice room. Expecting to be on the city side when we got to our room, we were very pleasantly surprised to find that we were on the canal side at no additional cost!!

The facility was absolutely wonderful and the staff went out of their way to treat our group with much respect and niceness. There were others in the group who weren't happy with their rooms, but the staff went out of their way to accommodate their wishes and everyone was very pleased with their accommodations!!

The rooms were all very clean and quite satisfactory. The restaurant has a wonderful view of the canals and the food exceptional. Make sure you opt for the bed and breakfast package. It is worth the small additional cost. There was a wide selection of foods at breakfast.

Jack, the bellman and concierge was exceptional. He was very helpful in making restaurant suggestions and arranging taxis for the group. I don't know how he was able to wear both hats, but he did and was great at it!! One evening the front desk staff even called him at home because we couldn't remember some details he had arranged for us! Jack's restaurant suggestions were fantastic, particularly his dinner suggestion at Brasserie Richard which was within a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

The Wyndham Apollo is a great hotel. It is about a 25 minute walk from the center of town, but a taxi ride was no more than 10 euros. Our taxi fare to the airport was 55 euros for six people with luggage. The taxi fare from Central Station to the hotel was 20 euros for four people with luggage. We could have taken a tram to a stop about 5 minutes from the hotel, but with luggage, we decided to take a taxi.

The next time I'm in Amsterdam, I would definitely stay at the Wyndham Apollo!!

Room Tip: Room 154 has a view of the canal and is very sunny.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2012

The hotel is centrally located in Amsterdam close to various business venues. The actual location on the crossing of some canals is quite idyllic giving a good Dutch feel. It is shame that a hotel in such a nice location is very mediocre in service and facilities. I spend my first of two nights in a room in the basement of the hotel just below the water level. Apart from it being claustrofobic, the room only had a bed that folds down from the wall (like the one used in comedies). As the hotel was fully booked, they could only offer me an alternative for the second night. When I return the next night, the access to my room was disabled requiring me to go back to the reception to find out that I had change rooms. I then had to go back to the old room again to get my luggage and find my way to the new, upgraded, room. This room was somewhat better, but still in need of refurbishment.
One other thing that travellers to Amsterdam need to consider is the parking fees that hotels charge. This hotel charges about 30 euros per night for parking outside on their grounds.

Room Tip: Stay out of the basement

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2012

I have stayed at this hotel 4 times and find it a good option, being walking distance to the centre of town (25 mins) and close-ish to the airport (50 euro taxi). The location adjacent to 5 canals is very picturesque - the restaurants and some rooms overlook this.
I would normally give this hotel 4 out of 5 as the rooms are clean and have everything required - however i did feel ripped off by some of the additional charges. Wifi was 50 Euros for 4 days! Luckily I checked before logging on so went for the 1 hour option - in a business hotel not to have access to free WiFi in some part of the hotel is really poor customer service.
Travelling alone I often opt for room service, however at 10 Euro tray charge this made it a very expensive option. I decided to go for the Chefs Choice menu of 35 Euro in the main dining room. Food was excellent if a bit small in portion size! Cheese board was fantastic and had a choice of Dutch cheeses which were well explained.

Breakfast is good - with the added entertainment of the breakfast waiters who have a good rapport going with both staff and customers. These guys actually made my stay!

At the time of writing there were renovations underway - I was shown to a lovely room however the generator noise was like being on an aircraft so I asked to change. This was done with no hassle - however nobody offered to help me with my bags.
The room I was shown to was definately quieter but of a lower standard than my initial room - which was a shame - but I accepted as it was quiet.

There is a spa on site which I didnt use.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the newer rooms overlooking the canals. If a generator noise bothers you - mention t...

Nice hotel among the crossing of 5 rivers, nice view from the cafe!! Relatively close to RAI center, either ultra cheap with taxi, or 15min foot. Mini-market next to the hotel (gas station)

Room Tip: Do not take the basement rooms

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2012

I stayed in this hotel for 3 nights on business in December. It's a very comfortable hotel, with lovely beds and pillows, and a nice bar/lounge area that overlooks the water. It has a gym and more or less everything you could need to make your stay comfortable.

The problem is that you have to pay a lot for these things. No free WIFI, in a business-orientated hotel? Really? Come on. The majority of people staying in the hotel are staying for business purposes and making them pay to use WIFI is just ridiculous. I wouldn't even mind if it was cheap, but it certainly isn't. Add to this the cost of breakfast, the cost of a drink, the cost of a movie, the cost of everything. It's a very expensive hotel.

But if you can look beyond the cost, it's a very clean and comfortable hotel. It's a shame because something as simple as free WIFI can be the difference between me recommending this hotel and not.

Room Tip: My colleagues mentioned that the rooms on the upper floors (6th) were considerably colder than mine...
