“Great value,location and fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2009

UPSIDE: You can't get as nice a place in Amsterdam for the price. It is fun with the gadget that controls the room lighting (color and intensity),TV,shades, and temperature. I am not a techie and I figured out the system in a few minutes. The location is a 20 minute walk to the museum area and 30 to central Amsterdam- through a beautiful, safe neighborhood with many upscale stores and restaurants. The tram to downtown is steps away from the front door and the train to the airport is a 10 minute walk. After a day of touring we would walk back by the FIDELIO restaurant, have a great meal, then walk a further 10 minutes to the hotel, check our email (free access) and then climb into a most comfortable huge bed with a big screen TV over it. Just perfect.
DOWNSIDE: There is little storage in the room so you need to live out of your suitcase. You need to be very neat as the rooms are really small. The shower was a bit annoying as it never got really, really hot and the "rainshower" is just useless. You need to start the shower by closing the door and coming back a minute later so the hot water is running well. Otherwise you get doused with cold water. The sliding curved doors for the shower and toilet "pods" are heavy and don't always glide easily. May be tough if you are not in shape or elderly. So some minor irritants. Some unavoidable artwork is typical in your face European (you are in Amsterdam) and may be sexually offensive to some and the coffee downstairs is very expensive- a problem if you like a few cups to get you going.
ALL IN ALL: A nice hotel with helpful staff I would stay again without question. We paid about 86 Euros/night and you can't do better for what you get. Best for a single traveler but OK for two.

UPSIDE: You can't get as nice a place in Amsterdam for the price. It is fun with the gadget that controls the room lighting (color and intensity), TV, shades and temperature. I am not a techie and I figured out the room controller in a few minutes. The location is a 20 minute walk to the museum area and 30 to central Amsterdam- through a beautiful residential neighborhood with many upscale stores and very good casual restaurants. The "5" tram to downtown is steps from the front door of the hotel and the airport train is a 10 minute walk away. After a day of touring we would walk back by the restaurant FIDELIO, have a great meal and then walk the 10 minutes further back to the hotel, check our email (free access) and then climb into a most comfortable huge bed with big screen TV over it. Just perfect.
DOWNSIDE: There is little storage in the room so you need to live out of your suitcase. You need to be very neat as the rooms are really small. And the shower is somewhat annoying. The water never gets really hot enough and the rainshower is useless. After 2 night there I figured out to start the shower, close the door and get the hot water running before you step in. Otherwise you get sprayed with cold water. The sliding doors for the shower and toilet pods are not always on track. One of four was always difficult to slide- and they are heavy. Get to the gym before you go. So some minor irritating issues. The artwork is typical in your face European (you are in Amsterdam) and can be sexually offensive to some and the coffee downstairs is very expensive- especially if you like a few cups to get going in the morning.

I was surprised with the overall experience: great location (just 5 min from the Amsterdam Zuig station) and 10 min from the city center by train/metro, you have a 24h buffet available (with great prices and very good quality), a multicultural and wellcoming staff and the rooms are amasing: very confortable, modern feeling and efficient! If you enjoy design, you need to experiment CitizenM Hotels, its a new concept that brings design, confort and quality together.

The Citizenm at Amsterdam City is a design hotel at a very attractive price. Rooms are small but adequate. If you want a relatively chip hotel that is good looking and cool, this is the place to go. If you want a lot of personal service, this is not for you.
There is a store downstairs that is open 24x7 (I think) and ahas coffee, some food and drinks, but it is quite expensive. Other than that there is no service. I did not miss it. What I missed was a pool, because a pool would have been nice in the (hot August) evenings. The only not so obvious minus point is that the Citizenm is not really in the city. You have to take the tram which takes about 15 minutes. But the tram station is just 50 meters from the hotel.

Id say it JUST about gets 4 out of 5. Good bits: The bed was FANTASTIC and huge, the decor was all new, very very clean, snazy and comfortable, good choices on tv including BBC1/2/3 2 sports channels and free movies, free good working WiFi.

The bad: I did not like the shower at all, its supposed to be a 'rain shower', its just like that, as if your standing in the rain the water is mostly missing you and spitting on you, you have to encase yourself in a glass chamber for the water to come out so if your clostraphoebic... you simply cannot have a shower. There is also no part of the cubicle that doesnt get a little water so you cant step away for a moment, when trying to turn off the taps you get squirted in the eye as you cant look up! Also, as you have to be in the shower with the door closed with nowhere to go before you get any water you test it on the hand shower first then flip to the main and bam... 2 seconds of HA HEH HA THATS COLD before it warms.

The whole hotel theme is snazy and informal with a very hands off feel. This notices as your pre paid breakfast sits on a coat hanger waiting for you to pick it up (1 Croissant, pot of jam, nice coffee, 1 bottle of juice, packet of joghurt with those cereal pots on top) its all in a bag, costing 9.95euro, which i think is poor value. I would not opt for this option.

You have to check yourself on a computer system, the entire bedroom is controlled by a hand console, which is not that easy to use and NOT for the technophobe. On the whole, this place suits one who doesnt like staff fussing over him, is ok with technology and an informal approach. The restaurant is all boxed sandwiches, sushi, heat your own microwave noodles! Theres no writing desk, 1 chair which you probably wont use.. if you read all the reviews, you get a feel for this place.

We were there 1 night and wish for more, only 1 stop by train from Schippol Airport (buy your train ticket from counter with real people in it, if you use NS machine, it wont accept your Visa unless its Visa issued by Dutch Bank). Modern hotel and very convenient, Tram No 5 only a few step away and you are in the City already (buy a 24 Hour ticket), shower is excellent but if you are going with a new girlfriend, then the toilet would be an issue (haha) but there is a curtain for courtesy, shower is excellent (except the 'rain shower' wasn't as powerfull as expected though, a real pity). If you go with kids, be carefull using the TV as it has adult movies on it, so be sure you lock it, comfy bed, everything else is nice, even price is only 101 Euro, you can have a canal hotel (dingy) for more than that, so, its a good value at the moment, when people start to discover it, then price might gone up. Free wi-fi and plenty of iMac at the lobby. staff are excellent, we arrived at 11Am and allowed to check in early without fuss. Bravo CitizenM. Will come again and start recommended to friends already.

I stayed here for a couple of nights whilst in Amsterdam on business. The hotel is near to the tram and a 5 minute walk to the metro. Rooms are spacious and the bed is massive. A selection of English t.v channels which is very rare in Europe. Not your standard hotel or business hotel by far, but a fun hotel for people wanting something a bit different.
