“FUNKY HOTEL”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

This is a really modern and funky hotel. It is a short walk of about 5 mins from the airport along a walkway so no problem even if you are pulling a heavy suitcase. The trains and buses leave from the airport so there are good connections for all the attractions around Amsterdam or further afield.

The rooms are clean and modern with all gadgets controlled from an I-Pad. The rooms have been optimised for space and as such are designed for sleeping and showering and not for spending a lot of time in the room.

One point to note is that the shower cubicle is clear glass - yes see through! The toilet cubicle is clouded glass so partially see through! Both cubicles are visible form anywhere in the room. If you are travelling with someone and value privacy in this regard then this hotel is NOT FOR YOU.

I stayed at both Citizen Ms in Amsterdam (one in the city, one at the airport) recently. Before heading to Rome, I stayed for 4 days at the Prinses Irenestaat location. It is fairly easy to find by the directions listed on the hotel's website -- when you're at the airport, just make sure you buy a single train ticket for the stop "Amsterdam Zuid." The ticket machines can be a little confusing so ask someone for help if you need it. The Citizen M is a very non-descript building in a very non-descript part of the city. This also means it's very quiet and relaxing. Transportation to the central part of the city is very easy -- you just catch the number 5 tram on the large street that runs past the hotel. Staff will point you in the right direction. I recommend buying a multi-day transit pass. As for the hotel itself, the best way I can describe it is to imagine that IKEA had built a funky little hotel. The rooms are all identical -- one ginormous, enormously comfortable King-sized bed takes up one end of the room. It touches walls on three sides, so if there are two of you, somebody will have to crawl in to the back. Lay down on the bed and you will be facing a giant T.V. screen that offers a pretty good selection of English-language news stations and movies. At the end of the room where you came in are a glass-encased shower and a separate glass-encased toilet. You can separate this area from the bed by pulling a curtain, if there are two of you, but privacy is pretty minimal in the room. There is a small desk and chair beside the bed and a small sink in the middle of the room. Beside the bed is a mini-iPad that lets you play with the room's very Star Trekkian mood lighting, operate the electric blinds, set an alarm clock, use the television or set the temperature in the room. I've gotta say, this was a lot of fun and made me laugh all the time. The room also has a little safe where you can lock up your valuables and set your own access code, and has excellent free wi-if. The room is definitely minimalistic, but if you go downstairs to the lobby, there are a bunch of mini-living rooms where groups can gather for visiting, or watching T.V. Or reading, lounging, working on your computer, etc. There is also a very nice bar (and you get a voucher for a free drink when you check in -- I recommend the Virgintini) and a couple of large tables where you can eat. Behind the bar area is a sort of food buffet where you can purchase a wide array of packaged sandwiches and snacks, as well as an actual buffet of fresh hot dishes around meal times. I actually found the food very good and reasonably priced in a mid-range kind of way. Every once in a while when you're travelling, you just want to grab something quick and easy.

The Citizen M will not be for everybody: there aren't a bunch of extras in the room, no mini-bars or room service -- that's how they keep the price down. The rooms are small and best-suited for single travellers or couples (at least the ones that don't mind going to the bathroom or being naked in close quarters). I don't think it would work for families with small children, or for people who like to party in their room (that's what the rest of Amsterdam is for). If you want a place that reflects the culture or history of the city you're in, you're better off at a B & B. But for a single traveller, it's a godsend. It's clean, comfortable, quiet and affordable. I hope they expand their chain to more and more cities, because I would stay there every single time.

Room Tip: The rooms are all identical. You might, however, choose the garden view side of the hotel just becau...

CitizenM is located a short walk from the Zuid Station which is only a 10 minute train journey from the airport. This is still relatively far out of central Amsterdam (20mins on a tram) but if you don’t mind using public transport, everywhere is still easily accessible with 2 tram stops (5 & 24) very near by.

This hotel is very cool, ultra modern and extremely clean with fantastic, friendly service, all at very reasonable prices. The rooms aren’t for the shy, if sharing, as there is only a thin curtain and some glass between you having a shower and anyone else you are sharing a room with, but this can easily be adjusted by playing with the super dynamic lighting system controlled by the ipad that comes with the room. The ipad also controls everything else, the tv, temperature and the blinds! The bed is huge and seriously comfy.

Breakfast is reasonably priced and is a buffet style continental affair, fruit, pastries, cereals, bacon, eggs, tomatoes along with juices and made to order teas and coffees.

In the evening the bar in CitizenM is equally as good as any you’ll find anywhere else in Amsterdam, the cocktails are fantastic and the staff are brilliant.

All in all a fantastic hotel and if you don’t mind compromising on location, I would highly recommend it. I would certainly stay here again on my next visit to Amsterdam.

So unique and so much fun. Not for everyone, this is a totally different experience. Not the best location in Amsterdam, better suited to travelers looking to trade off slightly lower room rates for location. But the lobby concept and rooms are a total trip. Almost too hard to explain, but like nothing else. Worth at least one night.

This is a very cool hotel with groovy lighting and gadgets. we have just stayed here for a couple of nights with our two teenaged daughters. The staff were absolutely lovely and very helpful at all times. The only reason for not giving it five stars was the unusual bathroom set up. This is not a hotel to stay in with someone you do not know very well indeed. The toilet and shower are both in free standing pods in the middle of the room. There is some frosting in the loo pod but none in the shower. Great value though for a very cool setting. Breakfast very good too. Main selling point though is that it is one stop from the airport on the train and then right on a tram line that goes straight into the centre of town.

Room Tip: All rooms the same!

CitizenM is awesome! Clean and good hotel. Love the self check in concept which was easy and fast. Join as member to get discount for rooms and get free welcome drink which is any beverage from the lobby. The room is controlled by a tablet and is super cool. The bed is comfy and super big!

7mins to Schiphol Airport at the Zuid station which is 5mins walk away. We stayed for 4night. It's great as it is next to Tram 5 which goes to all major attractions. However the tram can get a little crowded.

First night the room was not cleaned and 2nd night the towels not changed. We requested for fresh toilets and got them. But it was still a pleasant stay.

Will stay again!

As a seasoned traveler of 35 year I have stayed in high and very low class hotels with excellent and incredibly poor experiences. This hotel is certainly at the high end in terms of its all round ability to meet very good standards of comfort, cleanliness and exceptional friendly staff.

The rooms are fun and certainly very different in there layout which, my partner and I found to be great fun. Yes the rooms do have an edge of open mindedness and to some people in-personal layout with its glass shower and frosted glass toilet cubicle. However, the whole concept of the rooms work and are impressive especially with the iPad that controls the neon coloured mood lighting, blinds. Curtains, tv, music etc........ Brilliant.

The hotel is clean and operates to a very good standard and the staff are incredibly friendly and right from the check in they were very helpful and could not do enough for us

We stayed 3 nights and found the auto check in a fantastic idea which made it quick, stress free and even gave us options of rooms to choose. We had breakfast and an evening meal on one occasion each and found the price to be reasonable considering most hotels you pay slightly above average. The choice for breakfast was good and the evening meal buffet also to a good standard.

The bed is to die for and is that big you could sleep a football team in it. The shower is powerful and water piping hot with a choice of a large rain water head or hand held shower head. Although there is a large storage drawer under the bed the only fault I could find was there isn't a lot of space to hang clothes however, this certainly would not put me off staying at other CitizenM hotels.

The hotel is about 15 mins by tram to the centre of Amsterdam and the tram stop is 3 mins walk from the main hotel doors with the trams running every 7 mins. The cost is reasonable and you can get the 1 day, 24 and 48 hour tickets from the hotel bar with a 24hr ticket costing 7.50 euros

An extra specially thanks must be given to Deborah who made our entire stay especially welcoming and could not do enough for us, charming bar man Tayo and the rest of the team that were on duty whilst on our stay.
