Small rooms- everyone is the same is true theme, so is the friendliest staff ever. Rooms are more like pods with the largest beds I have had in Europe- it's easy to get lost in the bed. Everything is literally two steps away. Perfect business hotel- loved the 24/7 bar and the breakfasts were basic, but good. Only place to stay in AMS from now on. Exceptionally quiet area and across the street from Beatrix Park.

I have just spend 2 nights on a business trip to this lovely hotel. The hotel is very different from the normal hotel style, since the room has the same size as a ship container and every room is the same. But all facilities is good quality, and the lobby is my favorit lobby in all the hotels I have stayed in. The lobby is big with a bar in the middle and long tables, so you can be by your self or sek company. Love it

Room Tip: Very good wifi - that works

Went here for one night with my parents.
Automated check in process went without a hitch and only took about 1 minute for 2 rooms.
The rooms don't look like much when you come from the hallway, they nearly have the feeling of a closet, as the doors aren't really decorated with anything. However, once you are in the room they are super modern with hardwood floors and a huge king size bed.
In addition the shower and the toilet are in 2 separate glass cylinders. The toilet one comes with frosted glass but you can still make out the silhouette. I would say you better make sure that you are not going there with somebody that you don't know too well as it could be somewhat awkward. ;)
The entire room is controlled with an Ipad Mini and the room is very functional.
Mind you that they are on the smaller side, because the concept is to spend more time in the oversized lobby with the bar/ restaurant - which is meant to be more of a living room.
Certainly loved the experience and would go back in a heartbeat.
The "technology" with the ipad and the automated check in (even though the staff is always there and very helpful) might be somewhat overwhelming for older people that are used to more traditional hotels. My parents were okay for a night, but certainly wouldn't book the hotel on themselves.
The parking situation is a bit ridiculous as you will have to find a parking spot on the street. There is no parking garage attached to the hotel. Parking rate is around 21.00 Euro for 24hrs.
Easy access to the tram to get into the city center. Trams run about every 10min and the ride to the Central Station is about 20min. The front desk also sells tickets.
All in all a great experience. Loved the decently priced drinks and the atmosphere in the "living room". Highly recommended for business travelers or single travelers who don't want to spend top dollar for a classic hotel directly in the city center. Comes with free wifi in the rooms.
Would come back any time!

Room Tip: Believe all the rooms are pretty much the same and seem to have the same view.

The hotel was close to train station (no locals appeared to know the location of this hotel, which was within walking distance and near the train's nearby plaza); metro 5 was very close (left out hotel door, left to bus stop; could've used better directions from hotel staff); very easy check-in/out; close to seeing everything; hotel staff didn't know location of hop-on/off tour bus. Hotel had good elevators, very clean room, very nice staff. Hotel room is one room with only rolling dividers to separate the toilet or shower, sink in room with very large/comfortable bed that is surrounded by walls on 3 sides (need to crawl onto bed from one side). Everything in the room is managed by iPad (TV, window blinds/room-darkening shade, lights, mood lights that change color, central air). Great free wifi and many free movies; tv with multiple languages (English CNN). Eating area downstairs that is accessible 24 hours; breakfast for fee, pre-made entrees, a la carte foods, set buffet costs. All areas appeared calm during my visit; a family member said there was a lobby art depicting sex acts in the land of cannabis. Hotel room would be great for those not needing privacy, but a very nice and clean hotel.

A good stay but it could learn a lot more from the CitizenM team at Schiphol, the overall attention to detail, cleanliness and service levels in F&B outlets were a level away from Schiphol. Also the Wifi seemed a lot less stable than Schiphol. Nevertheless still very good and I would not hesitate to stay here again in the future.

Room Tip: Don't stay close to the elevators as it can be noisy!

The Citizen M is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. But come on; it’s affordable when central Amsterdam hotels are hugely expensive. It has a tram stop virtually outside the door on the Number Five line that bone-shakes its 25-minute way to the central station passing some key attractions and coming creakily close to others, while the establishment’s own Prinses Irenestraat quartier is well served by a wide choice of shops and restaurants. The main tourist areas are even a feasible walk away for the able-bodied.

And, as other reviewers have commented, the staff are extremely welcoming, pleasant and helpful, the location is quiet and the place spotlessly clean. So why the reservations? Because, for this you need a 21st Century trendy mind-set or you may lag behind; from your introductory encounter with the d.i.y. electronic check in/check out system to navigating your austere but tasteful room where a permit to fly an Airbus might be an asset.

In the public areas we could probably do without the numerous ditties that tell us, for example, that a particular German beer festival produces 260 tons of litter or that it would take an individual 2600 years to drink the amount of the beverage consumed there. And certainly without the snap-shot montage of pornography and sexual deviance that faces the lifts.

That said there is ergonomic and environmentally friendly brillance with a touch of mood magic. Lights that turn themselves on and off automatically and can be phased through a range of hues at the sweep of a bedside computer tablet; window shades and a black-out blind that, at the touch of a button, automatically descend with either the clatter of a metro car or the thunder of an express train.

Then, of course, there is the interactive lavatory and shower. But to be fair, there is a not-quite-dyaphanous curtain betwixt the bed and the sanitation, whose wrap around doors are moderately opaque. Being privy to the lavatorial proclivities of one’s companion is probably not most people’s idea of a romantic weekend, but if the montage on the ground floor turns you on…who knows?

As others have said, the bed is elephant size. But it’s not very comfortable. And, no doubt in the interests of environmental friendliness, our room was not very warm, something the tablet can’t seem to do much about. Neither can it produce more than two or three tv channels despite what the management suggest. There are free films but you don’t go to Amsterdam to sit in the hotel pretending to be at the movies.

Expect only light cleaning of your room, so, like me, always make your own bed.

The catering is querky. Food is available around-the-clock at, mainly, confectory style tables – a flawed approach. Breakfast was very expensive at 13.90E but it did look delicious. However, by the time the charming attendant has told you what you can and can’t have and how much it’s going to cost you’re bored with the whole idea. I had the added dimensions of a fellow guest nicking my cup of tea and a Dutch harpy in the breakfast bar berate me for approaching one of the unmarked, unreservable seats she claimed was ‘hers’. Clearly she hadn’t read the legend that constantly appears when the television screen in your room is dormant : ‘Greet strangers as if they were your dearest friend’.

For the average traveller once is probably enough of the Citizen M exprience.

Room Tip: Get there by Tram Line Five from outside the Central Station. Very frequent. If your room is on the...

Nice hotel. Everything is designed to be easy and efficient. Regretably my experience was a bit different. However it is my feeling, that I was unlucky and this is not the norm. When I arrived the terminal check-in did not work, because I had booked 2 rooms in the same name - I would think this is fairly common? By error I had also booked 2 persons in each room, where in fact only 1 were staying. This took some time to solve, because of refunding of prepayed breakfast. When the rooms was ready, my keycard did not work! All in all this was not as smooth a check-in as expected.

From here-on everything worked nicely. The hightech rooms are cool and the beds comfortable.

Food at the hotel is expensive, but good and accessible 24/7.

Dear Jacob,

Thank you very much for sharing your review on Tripadvisor.

I’m sorry to hear that you experienced some trouble at the check-in. As you already described, this is not the norm. It should normally take a couple of minutes to complete the self check-in process. Because technology sometimes needs our help, there is always an Ambassador available at the frontdesk to assist. I’m glad that everything else went smoothly after you settled in and that you enjoyed the room and our comfortable bed.

At canteenM we have food and drinks available 24/7 within a reasonable price range as you would expect from a boutique hotel. Of course we are more than happy to give you some alternative restaurants and supermarkets in our neighborhood.

Again, I’m sorry you did not experience a smooth check-in during your visit but I hope for the next time it will go without a hitch.

I wish you safe travels and hope to welcome you back to our hotel in the near future.
