“Best hotel experience I have ever had”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

The bed was comfortable. The room was very modern and interesting. The shower and toilet "pods" are very unique and a talking point to friends. The staff was friendly and very helpful. You never needed to wait for help. The hotel was cool but the staff made the stay fantastic. The staff called restaurants to check on dietary issues for us. They went out of their way to help us. The only con that we found is that a family would need two rooms as the hotel rooms only had a king bed. They also had free on demand movies in English. If I have another opportunity to stay at a Citizen M, I will jump at it. I cannot say enough good things about the hotel and have never been so impressed with a hotel before. It was a talking point of our trip (we have never talked up a hotel before unless specifically asked about where we stayed.)

If you are not prepared the rooms will blow you away. Really tiny with the width of the bed occupying the entire room wall - wall.
The remaining area has the basin, enclosed shower in a controlled neon light cylinder and the wc in another cylinder like cubicle. In fact the entire room's lighting/ambience/music/tv is controlled by the mood pad or something.
There is no wardrobe. Just a few hangers for your daily change.
Do not even think of staying here with kids or with a lot of luggage.
For a couple of nights of solo or couple travel it's a nice and unique experience.
The staff at the reception and bar are great. The bar has a good selection of drinks, ready made snacks and short eats.
And - like many budget european business hotels, they have a common ironing room- which I am not particularly fond of.
The city center is a 12-15 min tram ride away with the tram station right around the corner.
The adjacent railway station gets you to the airport in 20 mins or so as well.

Good hotel to stay for a business trip. The decor is very futuristic, with a remote to control everything about the room (lights, tv, alarm clock, etc.)

The staff is very-very friendly. (Touching on pushy, but with a positive vibe.)

If you have seen one room, you have seen them all - in all Citizen M's.

Me and my partner are into art and design and when we saw this hotel we had to give it a goal. There are lots of pros, with few cons. I will make a list so it can be easier for your final decision.

POS

1)Automatic self check-in
You go to the front of the computer and check yourself in the hotel. I loved this check-in. It can be tricky for people who is not into technologies, but very exciting when you get it done.
2) Great lobby, with a very sociable common area.
The ground level is FANTASTIC! It has TV's, Wi-fi, designed and comfy lounge and chairs. We spent quite few hours sitting in every single chair and couch here.
3) Good bar, 24 hours, with coffee machine and good selection of drinks. Not cheap but not expensive.
4) Great design
The room's shower and toilet stays inside transparent tubes coming down from the ceiling. And change colours through a remote control, with 4 options of colouring. You really feel like Jetsons!
5) Everything controlled by one universal remote control - A/C, LED lighting, curtains and blinds.
6) Clean rooms, good shower.
I loved the AM and PM body shampoo. AM shampoo to be used during the day to energise your body and PM before bed to help to relax.
7)Good internet speed
8) Cool and friendly staffs, very multi-cultural. I loved it!
9) Comfy and big KIng Beds.
10) Waling distance from the airport. No need for taxi and no struggling with airport trolleys.
You can walk the airport trolley all the way to the hotel with a covered roof above.

CONS:

1) Rooms are small
It's true that the rooms are small, but very functional. If you have many luggage, can struggle with space.
2) The remote control battery discharge extremely quick.
10-15 minutes away from the base can discharge it.
3) Terrible breakfast.
We were very disappointed with the breakfast. The coffee was good but the options for food really limited. They must improve on it!

Overall we had a good stay. I would recommend this place for young people, or art and design lovers.
Avoid if you are claustrophobic and have too many luggage.

Room Tip: King size bed are dying for. All rooms there are pretty much same.

I had the best margarita--ever--at the bar. Well worth the cost. The big kingsize bed was so inviting I almost didn't want to see Amsterdam--instead I took advantage of the late-check-out offered. The best 20 euros I've ever spent.

The shower did feel great, but it did leak out the side and I had to use several towels to sop up all the water that filled the room. I think the shower/toilet set-up is just a little over the top trendiness that doesn't really add to the room.

The black out blinds were a blessing. I travel with only carry-on luggage, I didn't have any space issues, but I could see how others would.

All the staff were incredibly friendly and professional.

Modern Hip motel-walk to the airport. Business trip, 4 of us stayed and flew out the next day. Great lobby with services, food, beer, expresso. Lots of gathering places on the first floor for lounging.

Hotel rooms have king size beds.. which is exactly how wide the room is. Great flat screen tv above the bed. small desk area. Circle pods for Shower area and toilet. These have sliding circle doors-Not much privacy, so I was glad I was the only one in the room!

Lights, window shades can be set for color themes. The remote controller runs everything!

The hotel is easy to get to from the Schiphol airport, just one train stop away. It's only 10 mins walking from the train station and the directions on the website are quite helpful.
Easy to get to the city centre by tram, takes about 20mins approximately. Tram stop is just outside the hotel.
Internet was available for free and was really fast. Staff was really helpful as well and did their best. The lobby area downstairs is really funky.

The hotel room however was just too small and we were not happy with it at all. I just felt depressed for the first few hours. We had 2 big suitcases and there was hardly any room for them. We could only open 1 suitcase at a time. Everything like the toilet, shower and wash-basin is in your face. It feels claustrophobic at times, would have been good if at least the windows could be opened (they are fixed). While using the toilet you really have to close the door to stop the odor from going out but it gets stuffy inside with the doors closed.
The other thing that let us down was the lift not working over the weekend. It was very inconvenient, although the staff did carry our luggage down 5 floors.
The room was OVER PRICED and is not value for money at all. I really had high expectations from this hotel after reading the other reviews on TA and paying that huge amount, but was very disappointed.

We would not stay at the hotel if we ever visit Amsterdam again. Only good thing about the hotel was its location and helpful staff.

DO NOT STAY THERE if you are a couple travelling with lots of luggage. The rooms are just not comfortable at all. Even the bed didn't feel like it was king size as mentioned on the website.

VERY DISAPPOINTED - NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER
