“Different; good for single person”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

Rooms are small and space efficient. Rooms are different and you should look at them on the web. I did not and was a bit surprised when I got to the room. The room is great if you are traveling alone, but not so good if you are sharing with someone else (as I was). Can be awkward as the toilet and and shower are "booth-like" tubes in the middle of the room and not in a separate room. The lights, TV and shades are controlled with a single remote which is neat. Free wifi is great. Room was quiet and very clean.

Good location for RAI Convention Center which is why I chose it, just a 10-15 minute walk across the park (a nice walk in the morning). Also, right next to a tram stop and a 5 minute walk to the Amsterdam Zuid train station (which is extremely convenient to the airport which is only 6 minutes from the Zuid station). The staff was wonderful -- friendly and super helpful.

As with most small rooms, the Citizen M looks less impressive in pictures than it is in real life. It really is a "cool" place. The location may not be optimal if you are looking for something very central, but it is quiet and parking is not an issue if you choose to drive. In my opinion, the rooms are fantastic in their use of space and essential comfort. The beds are large and luscious and the rest makes up in wonder what it lacks in size. I love the different colour mood options. A friend in the party that was a little older found the controls more than she could handle, but they were prompt to help. Finally, the bar is a bit pricey, but again the service was great. Overall, I prefer the airport location, but this as well was very fitting for the purpose of our brief, casual vacation.

This hotel is in an excellent location for getting to the RAI convention center where I was attending a meeting. It is also very convenient to the tram and train lines. That, free wireless internet and the reasonable price were the reasons I chose this hotel for my recent stay.

It is a little offputting for a middle-aged woman such as myself to find that the toilet and shower are right out in the middle of the room. Each is enclosed in its own "cone of silence" (for those of you who remember the old US TV show "Get Smart"). Everything else about the room is equally high tech - mood lighting in the shower & toilet enclosures, mood music of various types from the TV, room turns the lights on when you enter, room darkening shade remotely controlled.

However, the funky aspects of the place really grew on me. On top of that, the room was quite quiet, bed was comfortable, climate control was good, the internet mostly worked well and I enjoyed walking through the park every day to my meeting. The staff were endlessly helpful and cheerful and breakfast was available at any time.

On the down side, the small room had almost no surfaces on which to place items, no closet and only 3 hangers for clothes.

In sum, I would definately stay here again.

CitizenM is a unique experience and, in my humble opinion, well suited for the solo traveler. The hotel is great for easy (10-15 minutes) access into Amsterdam via the tram (#5). We parked at the Olympic Stadium parking garage for 3 days (8 Euros per day and they only take a credit card or debit card WITH A PIN)) and the parking comes with a metro pass to and from the parking garage (one way each). The hotel is a 2 minute walk to the tram and a five minute walk to the metro trains.
I mentioned solo traveler for the hotel because the rooms are small and if you have a large suitcase it will not fit under the bed (in a drawer) and for my wife and I we had to plan our movement. The bed was firm but comfortable (king size) and the virtually everything electric in the room is controlled by a remote control (including the 'mood lighting'). The room dimensions are probably 9 feet wide by 18 feet long. The shower/toilet are tube enclosed (they open and are somewhat opaque for some privacy and the mood lights can change (at your whim from soft neon blues to greens to reds). There is a small rack for hanging your clothes but not a closet so if you need to hang up a lot of clothes this is not the place for you. They do have electric blinds and a shade that the remote controls. There are elevators (we were on the 3rd floor facing the garden/trees. If you pay for breakfast at check in it costs almost 11 euros (13 euros if you decide you want to eat from the self serve refrigerated items (hard boiled eggs only, some bread products, cheese, yogurts etc. and not worth the investment unless you are eating on the run and NEED something before you go out. The rooms were quiet and the temperature control was good for my individual preference for a cooler room. Their lobby has the computer check in and a very helpful and friendly staff. Apple computers for customer use adjacent to the check in area/dining. They have a lot of modern lounges for the many customers they had. Overall I was happy for the daily rate (91 euros) in Amsterdam.

Room Tip: Ask for the garden view as the city view is a building across the street.

The hotel is situated close to Amsterdam Zuid train station which is under 10 mins. by rail from Schipol airport so a great spot particularly if you are arriving late in the day. The only downside is it is in a quiet business/residential area, which lacks places to eat close by, but the hotel does good sushi etc. The area is very quiet at night, though there is a nice bar near the train station you can pop in on the way to the hotel. 10 mins or so to the Museums - get an all day pass on the tram. The staff are very helpful and welcoming, they seem to really enjoy their jobs. The hotel is unusual in design, checking in, eating and room design, a big change from the norm. Huge comfortable bed, though the room layout may seem a bit strange, I thought it great, but my wife took some time to get used to it. Best to describe it as a adults only hotel unless parents get to the remote control fast! A bit out of the way, but a great experience. Will stay again - a great find.

Although the hotel is not in the city center, it's very well connected: just a pleasant 5 minute walk from the train station (which is just a 6 minute train ride away from the airport), and tram line 5 stops in front of the hotel, bringing you to the center of Amsterdam in 15 minutes, with strategical stops along its route. All in all very convenient.
We were warmly welcomed by the staff, going out of their way to accommodate us, and show us around. The lounge area is pleasant, colorful, beautifully decorated, what a treat to be able to sample highlights of modern design, to actually use a piece of furniture you normally just know from a picture! The room is identical to other citizenM rooms. Everything functions beautifully, shower and bed are very comfortable, I love the black out shades, because of serious jet-lag sleeping during daytime was a must for us...! My 12-year old enjoyed the mood lighting to the max. My only complaint would be the tiny size of the in-room safe. I really appreciated the free WiFi and the ease of not needing a password at all - WiFi worked flawless in our room as well as in the lounge area.
Breakfast was not exceptional but good for the price.
